Reciting Galatians 1:1-9 in Greek
Disclaimer: I use Modern Greek pronunciation, so if you are ethnically Greek, i apologize for butchering the pronunciation!
PSA: if a woman or minority scholar expresses concern that their work will not be accepted at a conference, do not say that they have a good chance because everyone wants diversity nowadays. This is not the encouragement you think it is.
I just received official word that I passed the written portion of my candidacy exams.
Thanks again to everyone for your prayers, good vibes, and encouragement!!
Y'all!!!! I am floored!! This proposal was a total moonshot that I thought had no chance!!! Moral of the story: always
#GuoForIt
Thanks to everyone who gave me feedback on my abstract!
τετέλεσται!!!
Today I took my oral comprehensive exam. I have officially passed comps and it feels so good!! Thanks again to everyone for prayers, encouragement, good vibes, etc!
My fav professor once passed on this advice from his Doktorvater: if you mainly read secondary literature, you'll be a secondary scholar. Will devote myself mainly to these for the next 5 years (before anyone gets worried, I'll be accessing HB and Greek LXX on Bible software)
We interrupt ur

updates with a personal update.
I am excited to announce a happy conclusion to my
#PhDApp
journey. This fall, I will be starting a Ph.D. in Christianity & Judaism in Antiquity (w/ focus on NT/Early Christianity) at the University of Notre Dame.

The post is misleading though bc it implies that the bottom is what Dresden looks like today, whereas in reality the part of the city in the top pic looks the same today. The "Altstadt" was rebuilt to its former Baroque beauty & glory. (pic from last summer)
It boggles my mind that someone can in all seriousness claim that parts of the NT were mistranslated when they have never studied Greek...like how do they not realize they do not have the skills required to make that claim?
Hey, i have never studied math but 1 + 1 is not 2!!!
Over the course of the past few days at

, I prevented 3 sessions from being manels. In every 1 of my sessions I was the only woman. In 2 out of the 3 I was the only non-white. That's 15 ppl across the 3 sessions in which i presented. 1/15 female, 2/15 non-white
Feeling like a wreck, might not delete later.
Just took my Latin final, my last final of the semester....no actually, my last final EVER!! (Not counting comps, of course)
I am thrilled that my paper "Is There a Meaning in This Paratext? The Euthalian Apparatus and the Catholic Epistles" was accepted for the "Letters of James, Peter, and Jude" program unit.
Too many people to thank, so thanks will be in next tweet.
Thank you for teaching me NT Greek 101.
Signed,
NT PhD student at

school for religious studies in the world, who has studied ancient Greek for 6 years and taught it for two
@jenniferguo
Μετά is a preposition, so the word itself does not have cases. In Hellenist Greek μετά may take a genitive, in which case it means "with"; it also may take the accusative, and then it is "after". /1
My comps start 3 weeks from tomorrow. Legit panicking. Would appreciate prayers, good vibes, etc.
Need prayer to just be efficient with the little time i have left, and to not be paralyzed by anxiety.
my lovely tweeps, I'm starting my PhD in less than a month (NT/EC at Notre Dame)! gimme all your advice pertaining to coursework/comps phase!
Feel free to link to blog posts. e.g.,

Ok, the cellphone app "Office Lens" is an academic game-changer!! We've probably all taken pictures of book pages with our phone when we don't need enough to make scanning worth it...Office Lens can actually strip the text and put it in a word doc in your onedrive!
SBL submissions are in!! This is the first time I submitted proposals and they took so much more time to prepare than I had anticipated. I am so behind on schoolwork 😭😭😭😭
when I read a PDF with endnotes, I use the snipping tool to snip the notes and then have that side by side with the doc....I think this is pretty genius? or is it common sense and I'm just late to the game?
I really love how scholars in biblical studies are usually so generous about sharing their work. I saw in a volume releasing this December an essay relevant to my work this semester and emailed yesterday asking if he'd be willing to send me the proofs. He sent it to me today!
I've gotten a lot of new followers from recent response to mansplaining. I don't usually respond with that kind of arrogant, "here are my creds" kind of way.
I'm just a bib studies/language nerd who wins all the book giveaways, loves corny puns, & cares abt (racial) injustice.
Ok time for some comic relief. I was reading about laptop specs in a FB group, someone wrote about what they thought they needed, people were offering various opinions...and one person responded "God will supply the ram" 😂😂😂😂😂
Me: Are you Dr. Crossley?
Him: yes, are you Jennifer? (at this point I was no longer wearing my nametag)
Me: how do you know who I am? 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
Him: you're all over Twitter

Hi, I'm Jen. I live in the U.S. I have an MDiv and ThM in NT, currently getting a PhD in Christianity & Judaism in Antiquity with NT focus.
After a year of accomplishing nothing, I'm delighted to announce that I will be presenting at EABS Sofia!
This was the first time I ever submitted an abstract for a paper that didn't exist yet. It still does not exist. Hopefully I can pull together something worth hearing 😂
Any bib/theo PhD students interested in having some Zoom gatherings? Obviously if you have community in your programs, that's great...we are all tired of Zoom. But wondering if there are ppl who don't, for whom Zoom would be better than nothing.
Twitter has really changed the SBL experience 4 grad students/ECRs. Every1 always talks about how attending SBL in these stages is rough bc ppl look at ur name tag & decide ur not worth talking 2. but the large # of ECR bib stud tweeps excited to meet each other counteracts that
Went somewhere by myself to eat lunch.
Someone from
#SBLAAR22
showed up and was like "you're eating by yourself? How's that possible? You're so popular!"
Me: even Jesus had to retreat from the crowds once in a while 😂😂😂😂
Dead Sea Scrolls seminar with Dan Machiela!!! Auditing a Friday 8:00 am seminar during my comps semester because it's Dan Machiela on DSS, for the 1st time at ND.
I have also been trying to figure out how to talk about this. I am one of the victims.. This is what I have been subtweeting about all summer.
The worst thing, as far as the predator is concerned is, is that he couched his abuse and harassment in spiritual language.
Working on figuring out how to use my voice again now that I can’t be effectively silenced anymore. I’ll start with this: a fellow student that abused me and proceeded to abuse, assault, stalk, and sexually harass two of my friends has finally been dismissed from the school.
I've tweeted about this book a lot bc i worked on it and it's a great book. Tonight i received an author copy, delivered by a TEDS friend who was passing through south bend. Thanks

granted, his comment on the book being overlooked was inaccurate...but I am quite frankly shocked at the way established scholars r dunking on a STUDENT expressing excitement about future writing...& as others have pointed out, that white scholars r doing this to a POC student 1/
Yesterday at a party I overheard a fellow PhD student (who is starting to learn German) ask what gender Käse is, and I said "you know how you can remember that Käse is masculine? Käsemann!!"
I'm pretty proud of this one 😂😂😂
"The burden of proof here is not in proving this act was racially motivated. In the context of present & historic anti-Asian sentiment & sexualized tropes related 2 Asian women, the burden of proof involves proving y this particular act was not racialized." Thx Dr.

How it feels one week later, after seeing scores of acceptances across a variety units...anyone else still waiting, bc I feel like all my Tweeps who proposed to SBL have already been accepted 😂
I don’t know how any Asian-American or Asian-in-America student got any schoolwork done this week. Dear educator: If possible, please practice compassion and leniency. Thank you.
I got it ya'll!!! HMU if you want to play in Europe this summer 😂😂
I'll have a week off at the end of June in between manuscript work in Milan and Goethe Institut and the week of July 23 off in between Goethe sessions. Of course weekends are for playing too 😂😂
The
@Logos
10 feature that searches your print library (but let's be real, we're all going to import ALL the books in our areas) is a game-changer for academics like me who don't have a great memory.
Yes I just publicly confessed that I don't have a great memory 😭😭
The scholarly fear of finishing preliminary study of primary texts and going to secondary sources terrified that every one of your observations has already been covered 😂
just had a great time talking to

about Jesus and ritual purity! Episode drops from
