If someone asks you, "Why do I have to collaborate with fellow teachers? Does it even pay off?" which research do you cite, which articles do you share, which books do you look to for some support for your answer. Let me know - thanks!
My father did this for me and my brother. I am still learning at 51. And as for being ‘intrigued’ by my mistakes? That ego strength is in development. Always grateful for these teachings.
Fourth book out in March - The title will be "Swimming in the Deep End: Four Foundational Skills for Leading Successful School Initiatives" - Cover design to include something deep end-ish :). Getting close to publication! Exciting.

How am I complicit? How can I grapple with my own racist behaviors and beliefs? How can I further educate myself on this global phenomenon? How can I do better?

for the opportunity to write a column for The Learning Professional this past year! Your kindness means a lot to me!
Getting to a place of maybe I can just get to next steps. Needed to do the laundry & sleep. What could be next? My 51st birthday is on Tuesday. What might be around the bend for this coming year? The anticipation...travel, romance, doing great work? All of above, I hope!
Hard Conversations can be humane & growth producing - they don’t have to be in all caps followed by an exclamation point. They ask us to speak as our best adult self & communicate with the belief in the other person’s potential too.

"An Emotional Planner gives kids the chance to think about their emotions in advance of an event, like a field trip, and begin the steps to learn how to manage those emotions using strategies." So smart! See other ideas for emotional regulation here:
Finding your voice around what matters is essential. Discomfort may arise. And, we can work to sit w/that discomfort yet still speak up. If something is educationally/socially unsound, physically unsafe or emotionally damaging to yourself or to others, speak up.

Middle school girl: “Teachers should never ask a kid, ‘Are you okay?’ We’ll always say, ‘I’m fine.’ It’s the biggest lie we tell.”
Me: “What should they do instead?”
Her: “Don’t ASK us anything—just TELL us we’re a mess. Say, ‘You don’t seem like yourself. Let’s talk today.’”
Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It's a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. - Pema Chodron

Professionalism doesn't mean suppressing our emotions. It's about expressing them in a way that maintains standards of respect and skill.
Professionals aren't immune to anger, fear, or sadness. They just refuse to let these emotions compromise their civility and competence.
Adults in schools are sometimes the challenge, not the students. We need to stretch ourselves to grow (up)-to develop ourselves & be at our learning edges, and we can do it. It'll energize us to do the work & we'll be stronger from our engagement & support of each other.

Wrote my new book, Stretching Your Learning Edges: Growing (Up) at Work because we, the adults, need to develop & can. Schools should support child & adult development. Human development isn’t an indulgence-we’re losing teachers because we don’t expect us all to mature & grow.
When people disappoint us, it’s not due to their actions. It’s because their actions fell short of our expectations.
You can’t control what people do, but you can choose not to let their actions drive your emotions.
Be clearer about your expectations—or set more realistic ones.

I have a mission to bring my work to the world to help others find their voices around what matters and to have hard conversations in humane and growth producing ways. I have companionship and family-just not in a traditional, nuclear family sense. And I am happy and fulfilled.

My brother and I had the cantor sing ‘My Way’ at my father’s funeral. It was his favorite song and spoke to him deeply. I take those lyrics into my life as I move forward without him here. I hope they are singing together with Frank right now.
