Vancouver based Illustrator and Concept/Vis Dev artist for Games, Films and TV. I've been working for 15 years on franchises such as Assassin's Creed, Marvel MCU, Halo, MTG and others. My portfolios can be found on instagram and Cara
Secret Invasion intro is AI generated. I’m devastated, I believe AI to be unethical, dangerous and designed solely to eliminate artists careers. Spent almost half a year working on this show and had a fantastic experience working with the most amazing people I ever met…
I worked with the Vis Dev team on character design, props, keyframes for the show etc. and nothing to do with the intro which would have been done much later I assume - to clarify
Samples of my personal work. I have been digitally painting for 15 years and been working as a concept artist and illustrator in Film, TV and Games for just about as long. I am currently working for Marvel Studios on multiple upcoming productions (1/2)
Also did a lot of ideas for Lokis throne - imagined it would be moving - molten gold forming a tree or something. Wasn’t used really but I liked them a lot!
Some early passes I did on Ammit and Konshu for Moonknight. The legendary
@VanceKovacs
did a take that really nailed her look though so watch out for that if he posts it!
More older work I haven’t seen in some time. I’m quite disorganized right now with my personal work…having a hard time putting in the effort to consolidate everything.
A drawing of my own shoe I did about 7 years ago while listening to a historian give a talk about ancient Egypt while we were developing Assassins Creed: Origins. My friend
@kakosicka
helped me pick these out, they looked good but were extremely uncomfortable.
Notably I spent about 7 years working for Ubisoft Montreal on their Assassin’s Creed titles including Assassin’s Creed Revelations - 3 - Unity - Origins - Odyssey and Valhalla.
Some creature nonsense. Is it just me or do less and less big games want weird creatures in them. I guess having a unique rig and animation is costly, and can turn away certain demographics but I’m getting really bored of seeing army people and zombies.
No shots of Ungoliant in the Rings of Power preamble sadly (did show draining of the trees) ah well maybe later? Also a reminder John Howe may be the greatest fantasy illustrator of all time.
some stuff I did for Pirates of The Caribbean 5? Dead Men Tell No Tales. Way back in 2013 or something. Still think they look ok! I think the woman in the final film was skinny and bald though, the opposite of what I did haha!
Didn’t do much on the suit itself, just some gilding and cape ideas, shout-out to Keith Christensen and
@MikeUwandi
for their work on the final suits! Looked great.
At the risk of sounding naive as hell: gimme a list of insanely high production 80s-90s anime that you people keep sharing gifs of, I wanna see more. Already seen Akira, GITS, Bebop, all the Ghiblis and Satoshi Kons...what's next?
Designs I did for people stuck in the Duat for Moonknight. Had a lot of fun playing with their composition...rock/roots/minerals on the inside maybe? I think their final design was mostly sand which probably makes the most sense
More VERY early female hero exploration from my time on
#AssassinsCreed
I was inspired by UFC fighter Rose Namajunas, scruffy and missing an eye or something - probably too intense! But wanted her to look vicious.
From the archives - I started this Twin Peaks illustration when I was still high off of watching season 3, I think I gave up cause I didn’t believe I was doing a good enough job with the Sheryl Lee likeness. Maybe I’ll return to it someday
Some ideas for the jackals - was trying something a bit more monstrous, plus Harrow’s Ammit staff which I think looked pretty close to the final design?
Some Miss Minutes visdev for when she time travels/shuts down etc. Played with the idea of different OS versions- 90s windows, 8 bit, etc. We always do a lot more than we’re allowed to show… maybe some day I can show more (or in the artbook!)
Here's some more misc. production art / development from AC: Origins for
#AssassinsCreedDay
Unused mummy skin, Aya shield explorations, murals depicting the life of Alexander the Great in his tomb I had to mock up, Aya Fayoum portrait
Do we know which concept artist or designer designed this helmet for Gladiator? It sure left an impact and gets appropriated a lot. I just wish credit could be given where it is due. There certainly doesn’t seem to be any historical evidence for it anyways.
Film / Game artbooks: I'm really not interested in seeing stills from the movie/promotional cast photos. Fill it to the brim with rejected ideas, prop details, how the designs evolved. I don't need to be SOLD on the thing already I want to see how it was made.
I don't finish anything these days - I've had some time off to do some exploring - if by exploring I mean doing the stuff I just tend to gravitate doing anyways.
I always wished there was a podcast about art direction in games or film. I’m so bored of hearing “I like it cause it’s stylized” or other vague statements, I wanna hear about the influences, why it resonates, is it consistent, is it in vogue, what can we learn from it etc
Here is an initial concept art for Skakin’ Bones crafted by our talented artists. See how closely the final 3D version aligns with this initial vision. Can you spot the subtle divergences?
Charles Darwin’s birthday today and my favourite quote from his letters:
“I am very poorly today & very stupid & I hate everybody & everything. One lives only to make blunders.”
