Great teaching carefully considers the information that needs to be excluded from the lesson. Presenting extraneous info often gets in the way of learning.
No, they can’t learn all of that in one lesson. No, that can wait until tomorrow. No, that’s not entirely relevant to the topic. No, that’s sort of an edge-case that will serve to confuse more than help them. A lot of teaching really is just an exercise in restraint.

As I continue to read this epic work, I am reminded about how often we allow kids to discover things themselves, rather than using our precious instructional time to teach as much as possible. By making the cover overt, we empower education to be the great lever of equity.
My wife: Aren't you meant to be relaxing?. It turns out this is my definition of relaxing: having the time and headspace to dive into Engelmann & Carmine's Theory of Instruction!
