New column: Anthropic is studying "model welfare" to determine if Claude or other AI systems are (or will soon be) conscious and deserve moral status. I talked to Kyle Fish, who leads the research, and thinks there's a ~15% chance that Claude or another AI is conscious today.

For frequentists who don't mind "but it was close" and for Bayesians(?):."Trusting" respondents - those who endorsed the statement "Most people can be trusted" - might support further development (p = 0.064). Data is free and publicly available, so run your own analysis.

FWIW, in 2021, only about half of American adults would report trusting their doctors to use AI. Similarly, only a slight majority would report feeling comfortable with an "artificial intelligence (AI) computer system" reading their medical records.
