All colour-ring sightings greatly appreciated from now on - hoping for >25,000 by March!.
With almost all the Isle of May shags now fledged they are already on the move. About 2000 have been colour ringed this summer at the east coast colonies. All sightings are invaluable, please report to shags@ceh.ac.uk @UK_CEH @_BTO @SteelySeabirder @nature_scot

#BOU2023 #ALFREDNEWTONLECTURE 12/18 Combination of additive genetic variation and very strong survival selection caused by extreme storms drives within-generation genetic change towards increased liability to migrate. Instantaneous #microevolution.

#BOU2023 #ALFREDNEWTONLECTURE 11/18 Impressive #pedigree data collected by @UKCEHseabirds on #IsleOfMay allow #quantgen analyses. Moderate #heritability in liability to migrate in adults = micro-evolutionary potential.

#BOU2023 #ALFREDNEWTONLECTURE 10/18 Individuals are highly consistent between winters: residents are almost always residents, and migrants are almost always migrants. Remarkably high between-year repeatability.

#BOU2023 #ALFREDNEWTONLECTURE 9/18 Individuals can switch between residence and migration within winters (late migration), and this phenotypic #plasticity can also experience varying reproductive #selection.

#BOU2023 #ALFREDNEWTONLECTURE 8/18 Very strong fluctuating #selection on seasonal migration versus residence in adult shags. Year-round residents win in typical years. Seasonal migrants win in stormy winters.
