Me to local bookshop: I have a book out in a few weeks, set IN THIS TOWN. Do you think you might stock it?
Bkshp: Maybe. If you bring us a copy to look at.
Me: I've brought copies of my books to you in the past and had to take them back weeks later coz you hadn't looked at them.…
Dom Cunnings tomorrow: "We only built the cottage in order to see if it was possible to build on that site. We intended to seek permission after checking it had not fallen down after a certain number of years. And clearly,

@WestYorksPolice
Apparently the police were only there because a family member asked them to locate this autistic 16-yr-old and bring her home because she was out alone in the city centre late at night, possibly drinking.
So the moral here is... Don't call the police. Ever.
Key takeaway here. Being a stay-at-home author is a great profession for shy people and those who don't like to push themselves forward or perform. Saying 'buy my book' is hard enough online. Face-to-face, it's like dragging a grater over your nipples. Please, be sensitive.
@theonlyzombie
@iamlivyrose
I'm so sorry this happened to you. To both of you.
I had this too, over my own aunt's death. 'How old was she? Are you sure it wasn't normal flu? Maybe it was something else? Was there an autopsy?' etc etc.
Sickening, inhuman and - frankly - bovine behaviour.
Bacon bap!!! Today I’m officially OFF my low carb diet. I’ve been on this diet, on and off, but mostly on, since mid-January. I’ve lost FOUR AND A HALF STONE (that’s 63 pounds) in 2023. Still several stone to go, I’d say. Back on the diet mid-January. Meanwhile… 🍟🥓🍔🧁🤪
Can't quite believe this, but the book I've been slaving over for bloomin' ever, is FINISHED. All written, edited, proofed. It's an indie book so now all I have to do is finalise the Kindle file and upload.
Phew!
Some books are like behemoths. And it's not always about size!
Just watched
#LockwoodandCo
and it absolutely didn't deserve to be cancelled. I don't know if its to do with awareness or instant watch list material but Season 2 has so much potential. Bad decision
@NetflixUK
My husband was elected town council Mayor last night. I'm disappointed to learn this doesn't require me to wear a flashy chain and go to fat cat lunches with him. Instead, I just need to postpone more evening meals until gone 10pm while he attends yet more council meetings. 😂
Goodness me!
The
@HarlequinBooks
site, where I periodically check my late mother's sales (she wrote c. 175 novels from the mid-70's until her death in 2000) has started welcoming me with her all-time book sales stats.
And THIS, my friends, is a monster number.
Go, Mum! 😱
@JMSimpsonauthor
You're so right! Writers BUY BOOKS. Why would you deliberately belittle someone who might spend hundreds in your bookshop over the years just to avoid stocking a copy or two of their books? It makes no economic sense to me, and I'm a former bookshop owner!
Another celebrity has written a book and gets a double page feature in a national publication. My 14th is out next month and I have to beg, scream and shout for a mention in a sidebar. 🙄
OMG. Now his little boy is autistic, so obviously he HAS to break lockdown?? Get knotted. I HAVE TWO AUTISTIC SONS. Both also have ADHD. One has Tourettes on top of that. Did I break lockdown when I was sick because my sons were autistic? No, I bloody didn't.
#sackcummings
Once upon a time, there was a 5 year-old autistic boy who couldn't speak, refused to hold a pencil, and was mostly home-schooled until Year 10. Today, he opend his results to find he got a Grade 9 in English Language.
WELL DONE, MORRIS! ❤️❤️❤️

I'm now on a mission to use the word 'lovely' as often as possible on social media. Apparently it's an unprofessional word. Yes, somewhere there is a list of words we must not use to describe books or writers, and it's at the top. Just as well I don't give a monkey's about that.
Apparently authors should only write from their own ‘identity’ or risk being cancelled for hijacking someone else’s authentic lived experience. In the hope of educating myself, I shall now be killing people and transporting myself back to WWII.

I have ordered red trainers studded with rhinestones. Am I mad? Yes, probably. But if it saves me having to wear high heels at the romance awards dinner coming up in May, I can face the inevitable ridicule.
I've heard this so many times. Writing a novel is hard work. It's a long haul. It's like giving birth to a watermelon, then having to take all the seeds out afterwards, polish them up and put them back in, often in different places, but without anyone noticing what's been done.

Old friend was "taking time out to maybe write a book. I asked him how it was going.
Him: 'Haven't started it yet. Can't be that hard though. You've done it a couple of times haven't you? Not rocket science. I'll probably knock one out in a week or so.'

A day of contrasts. Had a haircut at a tiny salon where I chatted to ladies who, big readers, were thrilled to meet a 'real published author' and were super friendly. Then popped into the bookshop where I felt as welcome as fungus on someone's toe. Hurray for hairdressers! ✂️
@authenticTERF
I have a catalogue of incidents, some major, others 'standard' for someone born in the 60's. But I also have kids who might read this, so I won't be describing those events online.
@domdyer70
What kills me is he actually got there, got into the airfield after hours of struggle, and then was turned away, all because of a last-minute US policy change. Now he may not even get out himself, after working so hard to save his many staff and rescue animals.
Heartbreaking.
So we've got our twin boys, both autistic, through primary and secondary school and past their GCSEs. When I think of them aged 5, unable to go to mainstream school, staying home and barely able to hold a pencil ... It's a miracle, it really is. They are both fine young men.
@Sophia25921181
@michaeljknowles
Alternatively, Sophia, you take your dog for a walk, call the cops on a man who speaks to you in a perfectly reasonable way, claiming he is attacking you, potentially getting him shot dead, and then carry on with your day. Something would be very wrong THERE.
Just to address a misconception for non-writers/ newbies. Major bestsellers tend - not always but tend - to be books that have big publicity campaigns behind them, while ones in bookshop charts/special displays are often there coz the publisher PAID for that. Not through merit.
I've been on the gin and I'm wearing a burgundy-ish bobble hat my son - who's away at uni - gave me for my birthday. It's been an odd kind of birthday, all the kids away or self-isolating, but heigh ho, that's 2020.
Cheers, everyone!! 🍹
@davidleestokes
THAT is hilarious. They get away with it because you assume it's meant to be things bobbing about, I guess, and you're focused on the couple, not the foreground. Such a brilliant film. 'Probably shouldn't have married her then, huh?'
I don't know about you lot, but most of the books I buy are ones I've seen on Twitter, thought, oooh, that looks good, and followed the link to Amazon or wherever. So, promo may not be popular with particular types of people, but it works for me and I'm fine with seeing it. 😊

Finally blocked a man today (to my knowledge with ONE published novel by what appears to be a vanity press) who kept jumping in to explain why my view on writing and publishing, as a professional writer with some 65-odd novels to my name, is wrong and in need of correction. 🙄
What is it about admitting that I self-publish some books that makes so many people treat me like a novice when it comes to publishing, writing, selling books? I've been doing this years and have published 50+ books with mostly Big 5 publishers. Maybe check my bio first?
OMG, how incredibly cool is this??? 👇👇👇👇👇

Vibe: Getting up after publication day, having put out ads and done tons of promo on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and other places, to find you've sold... drumroll, please... ONE COPY.
ONE COPY. 😱😱😱
@TheSharonAgency
Absolutely. I went into the local library recently and shyly announced who I was - after years of loitering incognito - and they embraced me as an old friend. Turns out they LOVE my books and instantly booked me for a reading/signing. But that's libraries for you. 👍
Had fun at the author's talk I gave tonight, though could have done without the lady who constantly sneered at genre fiction and insisted that 'nobody' ever wants to read 'trashy novels'. 🙄 Why do ppl like that even go to author talks??
Write what you want and what you believe in. Nobody really knows what's going to sell. Even if they say they do. Today's 'no hope' pitch may turn out to be tomorrow's 'brilliant and original story'. So make sure YOU wrote it. Not the next person.

I apologise for being cynical about publishing. I don't mean to put newbies off. Some people get lucky and it's all clover. Others, not so much.
Still worth a punt if you've set your heart on it.

Most authors earn next to nothing. Some of us live on the poverty line. Why can't people understand this??? DO NOT SAY 'I LOVE BOOKS' AND THEN DOWNLOAD PIRATED BOOKS. We can't live on fresh air, we will simply have to stop writing. STOP STOP STOP
Some writers worry too much, it seems to me, about following trends or pleasing everyone. Trends don't last and you can't please everyone. Over time, most writers develop a core readership, made up of readers who 'get' your books and your voice, and enjoy reading your stories.…
@NJSimmondsbooks
I'm a hybrid author and the one I was pitching is from HarperCollins! Though I'm astonished by YOUR story. With a TV deal attached, you would think it might seem more appealing, but noooo... I'm so sorry.
Social media is so toxic right now. As an author, I need to be here. But it's so incredibly stressful, I'm not sure I can be. I've already taken a break from Facebook. May need to take one from Twitter. So many people filled with hatred and bile. And some of them friends.
Good grief. Things are very complex here right now. Had one of my children in hospital last week, now at home recovering, and now I have another one admitted to hospital with a serious (unrelated) emergency condition. Please send good vibes. It's an incredibly worrying time.
Lovely email today from my publishers Thomas & Mercer. When I self-published GIRL NUMBER ONE, I made c. 50K sales. It was acquired and republished by T&M, and has made a FURTHER 50K sales. Which means overall it's sold almost 100K units. Just amazing, thanks everyone!! 🍾🎈🥳🎉
My late father Richard Holland would have been 88 today. 😢 Traveller, journalist, classical biographer, bon viveur, autodidact, Jag lover, father of five, grandfather of five, the man who perpetually annoyed my mum. 🙌
Miss you, Dad! ♥️
So..... I HAVE FINISHED MY NOVEL! ✍️✍️✍️
And just in the nick of time, as I'm off on my hols today with my youngest daughter. Camping and driving across France. A mum-and-daughter bonding trial, I mean adventure, begins in a few hours. Hoorah! 😊
Be good while I'm gone.
I'm confused. We were told the word 'woman' should be avoided. But now apparently we're not supposed to use the word 'female' either because it's ... I don't what. Offensive? I can't keep up. I guess the only alternatives left to us must be non-man and non-men. Yes? No?
Happy Birthday to my mum, who would have been 81 today. Without her successful example, I would probably never have become a novelist. Happy Birthday, Mum! Just wish you could have lived to meet your 3 youngest grandchildren.

Just endured ten mins with Jehovah's Witnesses at the door. Why am I so polite?
Still, at least I bemused them by being able to quote the King James version accurately back at them whenever they gave me their hideous modern verses. In the end, they went away in high dudgeon. 👍
Unless I recognise a number, I no longer answer my phone. If it's important, they can leave a message. But they generally don't, and when I check the number online afterwards, 99% of the time, it's a scam number. The number of scam merchants out there is INSANE. 🤬

Also, I rarely go touting books around bookstores now. I know better after two decades in the business. I only did this because it's set in my (very small) home town and I stupidly thought, hey, local story, local author, what's not to like? Obviously quite a lot, it seems. 🤣
