Truly believe if @tsungxu can pull this off, it will be as transformative as the automobile and will re-shape where we live and also could unlock tons of new housing opportunities just like cars did with suburbs. It feels so close!

Congratulations to my adventurer-explorer wife who took a grad school dream all the way to getting published in Science!
Many of you gave me so much encouragement when I posted here earlier about my 10 year long passion project to make a microbial map of the ocean. Pinch me because I can't believe I get to update you that today that research was published in the journal SCIENCE! (@aaas)

After showing that we could control the material strength of the collective in space and time, and also its ability to reshape, we tested some applications, from bridge forming, to self-healing to tool making. These are proof-of-principle at this stage, but they show the

Just realized there’s a great popular example of an anti-meme from my Millennial childhood! Also, I just lost the Game. (For those that aren’t familiar, the goal is to forget the Game, and if you remember it you lose and have to shout out that you lost among your friends)

The MOANA tool is live now, so give it a try! A ready-to-run docker image of the app is available at https://t.co/qB9xFVhKTC prokaryotes (16S rRNA amplicons), https://t.co/ffHUzHPce9 eukaryotes (18S rRNA amplicons) and https://t.co/YZyvWmV7x2 reconstructed genomes. Here are the
@EricAllenSIO @andreweallen @Cathy_withaSea @jamesgiammona @BanfieldJill Of course, microbial species are unique and their distribution patterns are more nuanced than six spatial cohorts. To address this, I built a tool called the Microbial Ocean Atlas for Niche Analysis (MOANA) which allows you to interactively plot the distribution of any taxa of

Also, look at this video from her research cruise! Intense! And they were dodging icebergs too! https://t.co/a8qc7904ts
@EricAllenSIO @andreweallen @Cathy_withaSea @jamesgiammona @BanfieldJill Special thanks to the GO-SHIP program, especially Lynne Talley and P18 Chief Scientists Brendan Carter and Rolf Sonnerup and the crew of the Ronald H. Brown for making this project possible. Thanks also to @jjminich for advising me on how to process low-yield deep sea samples,

Our officiant actually mentioned this photo during our wedding ceremony!
@EricAllenSIO @andreweallen @Cathy_withaSea When the ship docked in southern Chile, my now-husband @jamesgiammona flew out for what he thought was a vacation. He ended up bundled up with me in the ship’s walk-in freezer, re-sealing sample tubes that had exploded when immersed in liquid nitrogen before shipping them home to

Congratulations to my explorer-adventurer wife on the culmination of years of work sampling and mapping the microbial ecology of the south Pacific! Her thread does a great job contextualizing how cool this is, especially her discovery of increased horizontal gene transfer of
I’m very excited to finally share the results of a passion project that has been on my mind for nearly a decade. You can find the pre-print below, but what follows is the saga of how this project came to be:

[Steven Weinberg on renormalization of EW] Louise will forever twit me about all that. When we are having some little disagreement, she will say, “You couldn’t even renormalize your own theory. 😂

General Fusion has been my favorite approach for the fusion startups and they have made more progress than I expected! They're ready to start testing their full size machine next year!
Our plasma injector is ready. We’ve integrated the compression system. The fusion vessel is installed. After a busy few months & incredible effort by our team, LM26 assembly is complete! Check out our year-end blog that captures all our recent progress: https://t.co/ewf5Y8fup0

Ok, I think I’ll stop here for now. Next up in the paper is the evolution of the reaction centers.

Very cool! Thermal light is too low of a source, but there is light from vents. The source is currently unknown! And I remember reading about these shrimp with the “third eye” on top of their head!

Next, from zinc to magnesium and chlorophyll! That shifts absorption into the red since there isn’t any blue light around vents!

Learning so much! One of my favorite biochemistry facts was about porphyrin rings and the molecules they become with different metals at their center. Cobalt makes cobalamin (vitamin B12) Iron makes heme Magnesium makes chlorophyll Apparently Zinc makes another useful one!

Love the tone! 😆 And the first photosynthesizes used the soft red glow of vents for light! (I had heard the possibility of vent photosynthesis discussed years ago and didn’t quite believe it!) Also, this is why chlorophyll is tubed to absorb red light! That’s how it started!
