A ceasefire is of utmost importance right now to stop the immediate genocide. But it is crucial that, beyond an eventual ceasefire, we continue to push to dismantle Israel’s colonial occupation and apartheid system. Israeli atrocities will continue until we decolonize Palestine.

They are driven to murder us, driven to commit genocide, because they know deep down that the land is ours. They cannot live with that fact, so they must kill us for it. But no amount of violence will ever extinguish Palestinian Indigenous sovereignty, from the river to the sea.

As Nablus is burning right now with Israeli colonial violence and Palestinian resistance, we are reminded once again why the city is known as “Jabal an-Nar” (Mountain of Fire). Having long been a bastion of anticolonial dissent, the resistant fire still burns fiercely.

This depiction of Handala is in al-Am’ari camp, Palestine. In the image we see a precise rendering of Naji al-Ali’s character, coloured in yellow, painted onto a white wall. The fact that Handala is always depicted as a 10 year-old child is rich in meaning 1/

Israeli apartheid is only one dimension of the broader project of Israeli settler colonialism, seeking to eliminate Palestinians from Palestine. Zionism is the supremacist ideology driving this project. Decolonisation is the path to liberation, not inclusion in a settler state.

Handala acted as a compass for Naji al-Ali, and in turn for the Palestinians, always pointing towards the truth and towards Palestine. Even in death, Handala still faces the land, and the truth of an enduring Palestinian Indigenous sovereignty over it 7/7

Nablus has long been a bastion of Palestinian resistance. The city played a leading role in the 1834 rebellion against Egyptian forces, in the 1936-1939 revolts against joint Zionist and British colonialism, and in the Intifadas. This is a legacy that is upheld today 3/

These are the death throes of settler colonialism. Israel—a settler state rife with contradictions—desperately attempts to secure itself by eliminating Indigenous Palestinians. Other colonial states rally behind this genocide, clinging anxiously to their waning global domination.

… This did not stop him. It did not scare him off. They thought it [assassinating him] is the only way they could silence him. They were wrong in a way, because, as he predicted, he has passed away thirty years ago, but his works do live until now.” 4/4

With the Zionist colonisation of Palestine, Israel appropriated the Yafa/Jaffa orange both materially and symbolically – stealing Palestinian orange groves, marketing the Yafa/Jaffa orange as an Israeli product, & the orange becoming an Israeli national symbol 3/

Leading up to his assassination, al-Ali received many threats on his life, but refused to stop producing his cartoons or to water down their content. His son Khaled describes, “They tried to scare him off. They tried then to basically banish him somewhere else [London]… 3/

Next to the martyred Handala reads, “From our blood to our blood is the border of the land”. Another firm claim to Indigenous sovereignty on the land, here Palestine is reclaimed in its entirety, against the attempt to fragment it into distinct territories 5/

In my own time walking those halls I saw this line trotted out over and over by spineless politicians. But we refuse to play their pathetic game. Our power derives from our enduring sovereignty over Palestine, not their colonial institution.

Weathered and faded, the image has been chipped away at by time, to the point that the letter “ra” in “Nar” (Fire) is no longer actually present, but inferred. However, we can read that fire in the eyes of the resistant Palestinian here, in which it still burns fiercely 4/4
