Does each govt dept therefore need an add-on directorate responsible for driving long-term systemic change, by bringing together the policy, operational & digital teams working in that sector already? Or do we need a centralised function working across all of gov to do this? 5/5

So I’ve started wondering — have I got it wrong? Do ministers and senior leaders not actually see policy teams as the people responsible for driving long-term systemic change within complex systems? Is the real problem that no one within government has that mandate?... 4/5

But in recent years, I haven’t seen any real drives to reform the policymaking process — tweaks around the edges, sure, but no serious approaches to enact the wholescale change that would be needed to implement a new approach. (Please do correct me if I'm wrong here!)... 3/5

A core part of my theory is that government policy teams should see themselves as ‘stewards of complex systems’, and therefore policymakers should be taking approaches to problem solving rooted in continuous learning, testing, and adaptation... 2/5

I’ve been thinking a lot about how government can function in ways that are more aware of and responsive to ordinary people’s needs... 1/5

"In any complex emergent system, one problem does not equal one solution." #complexity #servicedesign Such a clear and critical point about how change happens, from @LighthouseUCPD at the @RCA_SD seminar on public policy design today.

Loved chatting about the opportunities to bring #servicedesign methods & mindsets into the heart of government with @saumyasinghal94, Ken Taniguchi, @nrebolledo and @federicovaz at the @RCA_SD. So interesting how similar our journeys are across cultures and levels of govt!

Thinking about how to describe in simple terms how mission-driven government could function (leading to conversations about skills required, funding teams not projects, shifts in culture & governance, etc). What do people think of this diagram? Anything you'd change, add, delete?

Are you a #servicedesign-er sitting around waiting for election results and not sure what to do for the next couple hours? Ever thought of a career in government? The work is fascinating & the people are great. The pension's not bad either 😉 Come join us!

My dad's theory is that Torrens doesn't know how to bunt. I don't think any major League player should be able to get away with not knowing how to bunt.

Lindor's long fly would have scored the go-ahead run if Torrens had moved the runners up.

In my many years as a leader of change, I have participated in some brilliant workshops & some terrible ones. A key issue is workshop design. I've come to understand that workshop design is more important than facilitation. If we take a systems view of the event, there are many

At a workshop today to think about the skills designers need in government, and I found myself scribbling down these 8 core skills of a service designer. The bottom two underpin the top 6. Thoughts? (Extras points for correctly interpreting my scribbles)

For those who care about how to make govt work better for the people it serves, this from @jamestplunkett is the most important thing I've read in a long time. It lays out all the key issues #policydesign & #DigitalTransformation colleagues have been working toward for 10+ years
The Radical How: What would it take to run a mission-oriented government? My attempt to summarise an ace new report by @tomskitomski @ad_greenway and the folks at @PublicDigitalHQ and @nesta_uk
