Imagine this chart plus “Your name here?” in the school science lab.
At Our World in Data, we spend much of our time counting deaths. But it’s just as important to know the number of lives saved — even though it is harder to estimate and involves much larger uncertainty. My Data Insight today includes this chart of some estimates.

I'm not sure "It's rare that Hamas can muster 2 squads of unsupported infantry for an attack, and when they do we easily curb stomp them" is a line that will win people over regarding necessity of continued military operations etc

At least 18 Hamas fighters try to raid army encampment in Khan Younis; 3 soldiers hurt; military thinks the gunmen sought to kidnap troops

Feel very sorry for the police who now have to police “Plasticine Action” tshirts because the government just had to be seen to do something .

It's a great book. It was brought together prior to the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, but if anything that conflict has only increased the salience of what it covers. You can find the whole thing here:

This volume analyzes the phenomenon of non-military warfare in theory and practice, including its relation to military warfare, and how states can understand

New publication! I have a book chapter out today in @OAJonsson and @kaihko 's Non-Military Warfare: A War of Our Time. My chapter focuses on conceptualising and defining participation in a range of sub-threshold/grey-zone/etc activities that occur war and "peace"

UK prison system is currently 6k over capacity, so arresting 532 people in a single day won’t cause problems, eh?
theguardian.com
Total of 532 arrests at London protest on Saturday, most for displaying placards or signs in support of proscribed group
This is before we get into the colossal waste of police/CPS/court time that will follow from the inevitable reporting of tweets or reposted images. If a fraction of people in that mileu publicly disagree with the proscription order we’ll DDOS our own criminal justice system.

Probably the same reason Surveillance Capitalism basically skipped the second most important market for the historical development of surveillance capitalism and the most important market for the future of surveillance capitalism - doesn’t fit the narrative.
Why does everyone in Europe carefully track which American labs sign the AI Act Code of Conduct but seem completely uninterested as to whether Chinese ones do?.

Or, as Martin Ford pointed out in 2009(!) there is an alternate, bleaker, world where mass automation leads to the decline and destruction of mass production
The head of DeepMind says AGI will take 5-10yrs & lead to radical abundance, incredible productivity & prosperity for society. But he also cautions…. We must ensure it is “distributed fairly”… “but that’s more of a political question.” . 🤔 telling me.

Irruption -> Frenzy -> Crash
The AI infrastructure build-out is so gigantic that in the past 6 months, it contributed more to the growth of the U.S. economy than /all of consumer spending/. The 'magnificent 7' spent more than $100 billion on data centers and the like in the past three months *alone*. 1/🧵
