1. Just finished my master’s thesis on the role of financialization in abysmal #LongTermCare (#LTC) outcomes, where I exposed the web of perverse incentives that led to this mess. Here's what I learned 👇

In the first nine months of 2020, as the COVID-19 catastrophe unfolded across Ontario, the three largest publicly traded long-term-care operators in the province made huge payouts to investors while taking millions in government funds, data shows. https://t.co/DjvirNGGqv

“I think the way that we treat the most vulnerable seniors in our society is really a mark of how we’re doing as a country,” says Jackie Brown. This doc is just the tip of the iceberg to start making real change.

If polluting a lake can increase GDP because the resulting cleanup stimulates the economy, why do we continue to use it as an indicator of national wealth? In "Missing Values," @jackiebrownTO explores different ways of quantifying a country's wellbeing. https://t.co/a5VGD547DY

As policymakers set their sights on frameworks beyond GDP, the question of what it means to quantify a nation's wellbeing becomes pressing.

Please consider donating! It is unconscionable that refugee claimants and asylum seekers are without food and water, let alone shelter. Myself and @lorrainelamchop are asking for your help to purchase these items to help keep people hydrated and well.

Important read on the ongoing consolidation of Ontario's long-term care homes into the hands of companies that treat elder care as a money-making investment. Thanks @royinori and @TheLocal_TO for giving me the opportunity to speak with you for this story

Ontario has the highest percentage of for-profit LTC homes in the country. Now, @royinori writes, new deals are consolidating elder care into the hands of a few major companies.

@jackiebrownTO: financialization of seniors’ housing correlated with worst COVID outcomes. Low wages mean “staff work in long term care homes by day & stay in shelters by night.”

You're not even going to be able to pass that asset onto your kids - focusing on asset appreciation, rather than public service provision, means that you will have to liquidate the family home to pay for your eldercare and your kid's student debts. 18/
