This paper had >9 lives: revisions & rejections at many journals before finding home at #JPSP. We got discouraged & almost quit a lot. But we also cared about FOMO & kept learning. PhD students: If you’re passionate about an idea, be resilient & scrappy! It can take a minute.

What can be done? We tested a few interventions; one worked: Thinking back to a prior bonding experience. If you remember connecting with friends previously, it can offset the anxiety. Life hack? Try to remember, you belong!.

Bottom line: We just want to feel like we belong, and FOMO is the alarm bell telling us that this could possibly be in jeopardy.

So it’s possible to get FOMO for things that *aren’t even fun.* We found that FOMO is greater for a missed grueling initiation event for a valued group than it is for a super-fun initiation event for a group we don’t care about.

So FOMO is not *really* about the missed event. If we miss a concert, we’re not FOMOing over the missed music. If we miss a dinner, we’re not FOMOing over the missed food. FOMO is about the missed bonding: those intangible, magical moments where we forge connections & grow close.

We find that FOMO occurs when missing out on valuable social bonding, and it’s unpleasant bc we worry about our future relationships. If our friends are bonding and getting closer w/o us, where could this leave us? On the outside someday? THIS is the heart of the FOMO anxiety.

“FOMO” is everywhere: on social media, in marketing, even in finance!. But what does it REALLY mean when we feel FOMO? . What are we missing out on, and why is it so unpleasant?.

🚨Extra-exciting paper alert🚨from me, Cindy Chan, and @barbarakahn: Our paper on #FOMO is finally, finally, finally, finally OUT in #JPSP @APA_Journals!. This baby took T E N years (that's right, 10!) to see the light of day. What's it about? Don't get FOMO; click through! (🧵).
