Sifting through old work today as I'm building a new NoPattern site. Found myself opening the original Windows 7 desktop PSD, one of the most insane files I ever had to work on: 16 Bit, 450DPI, 10,800 x 6,750 pixels made on a Mac Pro (!) in 2009 😭 Getting PTSD.

12/13 Since its launch in late 2020, the redesigned design system has remained stable and introduced a clear versioning mechanism to support ongoing evolution. As the business expanded, the system scaled across 8+ platforms, becoming a daily foundation for designers and others.

11/13 To continuously respond to team needs and evolve the system, we established a set of ongoing practices.

10/13 What changed? - 80% faster page building. - Designers call it “surprisingly delightful”, and “anticipated the user’s intent.” - Even PMs use design templates to mock ideas. The structure didn’t just work—it spread.

9/13 We rebuilt the system to serve different roles: – UI Library: logic & variants – Templates: plug-and-play – Guidelines: narrative & rationale (and more…) Three core documents. One shared foundation. Structure shapes attention. And attention shapes the quality of work.

8/13 By redefining the relationships and purposes of core documents, I reshaped the information flow—allowing the system to support complex collaboration and serve the distinct needs of each role. System-centric and human-centric design don’t have to be a trade-off.

7/13 But the deeper shift? From control → support, from product → service. We weren’t just changing structure—we were shifting the system’s paradigm. (Leverage point #2)

6/13 The leverage point could help intervene in situations: The selected leverage point: #6 – The structure of information flows. (Meadows, 1999) This became the key of intervention.

5/13 We were stuck in loops we didn’t yet see. These were feedback loops—and they were quietly compounding the problem.

4/13 These weren’t just UX issues—they were systemic. The Gigamap made that complexity visible. (Check the link in the last post for an interactive version of this Gigamap).

3/13 What helped one role confused another: – Juniors: Can’t find components without visual clues. – Designers: Variants clutter search results. – System designers: Atomic parts break the doc flow. One structure. Too many needs.

2/13 As our team grew, I started making the first design system, everything lived in one massive Figma file—components, variants, docs, spacing, demos—all blended together. Flexible? Yes. Sustainable and easy to use? Not quite.

I redesigned a #DesignSystem in 2020. The strategy worked—but I didn’t yet have the framework and language to capture its complexity. Grad school gave me the lens to unpack the complexity behind it. Here’s how I’d tell the story now—through systems thinking. Open the thread 🧵
