When asked, I have always refused to hack into online accounts of deceased individuals as there is no urgency and you may be at risk of violating others’ privacy as well. For missing people it is different as their digital footprints may contain traces of their disappearance. 4/4.

You could always argue that this would need to go through law enforcement but I quickly noticed that in this case, this wasn’t really possible. As a family, you can also act quicker but you risk that any evidence you find can be perceived as tampered with. 3/4.

How long would you need to be missing? And how could you rule out a voluntary disappearance? Would it only be acceptable if there is evidence that this person needs urgent care or is in danger (which there is in our case)? 2/4.

Yesterday, I hacked into the online accounts of my cousin that has been missing for nearly a month in an attempt to find more traces around his disappearance. By doing so, I broke the law, which brings up an interesting debate: does a missing person have the right to privacy? 1/4.

Update on my missing cousin that is missing for 11 days near Agadir, Morocco:.- He was likely suffering from psychosis during the time of his disappearance.- Large scale searches by the local authorities did not yield results .- Due to his presumed state he needs urgent care.-
