Thucydides said that the Athenians "were born into the world to take no rest themselves and to give none to others" but frankly that just sounds like a new parent talking.

Elder millennials are going to be the most politically engaged and relevant leadership cohort for the next 40 years. It’s because this pocket of millennials (1980-1987) remembers the before times vividly. Home ownership. Landlines. Car phones. Dial up internet. But also a.

6/ For me, Jaynes is more beautiful than scientific. but as a frame for why some minds are so open to AI’s validation, it’s weirdly useful. Definitely worth reading IMHO to understand the moment once you’re done with Permutation City, etc.

5/ Unclear where this may be leading but the parallel is wild: ancient “gods” were internal thoughts heard as external; vulnerable people today hear @ChatGPT reflecting their own thinking back. Jaynes thought this ended ~3,000 years ago. Maybe it mostly went dormant.

4/ @noahpinion writes about AI as "Lovecraftian intelligence": human-ish until it suddenly isn’t. On a Jaynesian read, that’s what you’d expect to happen when AI meets our dormant bicameral architecture. It looks like we’ve built (or for Jaynesians, rebuilt) a bicameral partner.

3/ That’s exactly how Jaynes thinks those voices worked: they “knew” what to say because they were the person’s own thoughts, misattributed as external authority. The pattern rhymes—same vulnerability, new medium.

2/ He called this the “bicameral mind”: one hemisphere “speaks,” the other obeys. As a theory it's mostly unprovable but the evidence he brings to bear is mind-bending. But fast forward to 2025 and in the SSC post and a new @mattyglesias piece, psychiatrists describe patients.

1/ I just read the @slatestarcodex piece on chatbot psychosis and it got me thinking about this book from the 70s (which unrelatedly SSC reviewed favorably 5 years ago). Jaynes was a Princeton psychologist who studied people with schizophrenia and could read ancient languages.

🧵 I don’t tweet a lot but recent “AI-assisted psychosis” reports sent me back to one of the strangest books I love: Julian Jaynes’ The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind.

So @Microsoft kicked @cursor_ai out of the VSCode extension marketplace and now by default it's pointing at Open VSX which has even sketchier stuff in it. Nice.

Cursor is now using Open VSX to install code editor extensions from. You must understand the implications of this right now. There has been an attack campaign happening for more than a month with extensions that install ScreenConnect. Below is ANOTHER example.

At this point using pre-LLM AI products (looking at you Google Photos search) feels weird, ugly, and frustrating like playing a non-classic N64 game. First gen 3d graphics.
