chess story is my first stefan zweig and it will not be my last. so much tension and psychological depth packed in just a surprisingly short amount of pages. very compelling characters. zweig is no doubt a seasoned grandmaster of storytelling. five stars.

i don't know but one thing i like about reading long, sprawling novels (800+ pages) is that it gives me a kind of assurance that i am, and should be, in no hurry to finish such a work, because some of these novels are meant to be unfolded slowly and savored.
