It's rather strange that one of the core activities of academia—and, as far as I know, this is true across all its branches—has become the writing of texts that no one will ever read.

One of my fav places in Changchun is Huá Lián Antique City. Artisans of all types. I’ve bought antique bottles, pen holders & teapots here. I saw an incense burner with Islamic motifs that ended up in a Buddhist shop! Bought ‘oud incense (沉香木) & a Daoist compass (luópán; 罗盘)

While there is much on Sini Calligraphy, there is relatively little on Sino-Muslim paper-cutting as a heritage practice. Ma Jun [马俊], a Gansu-based paper-cutter, draws inspiration from his native province & produces both classic and contemporary types of paper-cuts 🧵(1)

The SI has diverse perspectives (eg Confucianism, Islamic philosophy, Euro-American) & opens new pathways for critical global scholarship. I've yet to see in my career such an interesting & diverse collection of papers on this topic See Editorial here: https://t.co/J2VqZMoE0w

6) Studying mosque plaques is inquiry in itself. Biǎn’é (匾额; trad Chinese plaques) have multiple meaning. Many connect to Chinese civilisation as well as religion, blend Chinese architectural style with heritage literacy & show how Sino-Muslims express belief, ethics & identity

Been looking at an aspect of my heritage literacy data, plaques (匾额 biǎn'é) that are found at China's mosques. Here's a thread on a book that documents 2,600 such plaques. They reveal a lot about the origin stories of mosques & showcase the linguistic confluence of traditions..

Consciousness is a first-person phenomenon experienced directly, whereas empirical science is dependent upon third-person observation. If the reality of consciousness lies outside the scope of empirical science, how can science come to any meaningful understanding consciousness?
