OTD 105 years ago, HMS Hythe, carrying soldiers from the 1st/3rd Kent Field Company to Gallipoli, was hit by HMS Sarnia. HMS Hythe sank so quickly, a lot of the men drowned. On board was my 2x great grandmothers husband Albert Skinner. He was just 22. Today we remember them all.

105 years ago today, 129 soldiers of the 1st/3rd Kent Field Company, Royal Engineers drowned when the ship they were on, HMS Hythe, was hit by HMS Sarnia. Most of these men were from Tonbridge, Southborough and Tunbridge Wells, including four from the Funnell family. We remember.

Today whilst metal detecting, I found a wish list item! It’s a military dog tag. This should be able to be traced all the way to the original owner, I am about to start my research into it. Can’t quite believe I found it.

I will be laying wreaths this morning for those lost 103 years ago today on board HMS Hythe, from West Kent and beyond. This single incident ripped the local community apart. I will be thinking of the four members of the Funnell family who died on this day off Gallipoli.
