#Omicron narrative seems to be 1 of opposite extremes - ie it is mild OR the system is on the verge of collapse. Neither is true & IMO such facile reports are not helpful. Once again, we are stretched, but coping & adjusting to an ever changing reality on the ground @Sunnybrook.

the everyday reality I see on the frontline @Sunnybrook: #1 issue is fully vac’ed staff in isolation b/c of exposures while asym/sniffles. We are battling a new variant using outdated rules - in a fight with 1 arm tied - closing beds due to staffing etc. We need to pivot & quick.

Déjà vu - watching Covid rates raising in the UK, US & Israel. In Ontario 🇨🇦, our thoughts are all on reopening & recovery. As a cardiologist, I am passionate about the need for recovery; but, are we using this time wisely to avert a repeat wave? @Dr_ChrisSimpson @Sunnybrook.

As TAVR has expanded, less use of the heart team, in particular in mature programs. Do we need to rethink this concept as tavr becomes standard of care? Ie use in borderline cases only? Is that more efficient? ⁦@CorHealthON⁩ ⁦@Sunnybrook

As we shift our focus on the immense & complex care deficit & backlog- some principles.1. It will require the same degree of resources & commitment as #covid.2. Load sharing/single entry waitlist needs to be on the table.3. All solutions via lens of Equity .@Sunnybrook.

‘avoiding overly dogmatic language about science-based policies – we can moderate public frustration (and the concomitant loss in trust) ‘. Below should be required reading for scientists/MD involved in policy.

My hope is that one of the legacies of the #pandemic is a greater appreciation of: 1) the value of a trustworthy research process; 2) the need for good science communication; and 3) that science is a process. My take: via @HealthyDebate cc @fdnPETF.

4. This work highlights how #COVID has impacted on our ability to deliver CV care in structural heart space and will need better working relations between surgeons / cardiologists re how to increase throughput of AS pts and minimise impact @RodrigoBagur @gonzaeperez @perc_surgeon

It is my hope that we apply the same sense of urgency and system wide leadership to dealing with deferred care as we have to covid care - I am confident we will. @Sunnybrook.

Postponing "elective" procedures has effectively resulted in the triaging of who does—and doesn't—get life-saving care. “Patients have died because we’ve had to make decisions about who is the person we have to treat first," says @hwijeysundera. Read more:

Totally agree. If you have a heart attack - need your cardiologist. If you have to communicate a difficult topic to a large audience - need your communications advisors. Our ‘behind the scenes rock star’ @katrnaz @Sunnybrook.

As ‘non-expert’, I am surprised by the amateur communications & lack of consistent messaging by experts in official & advisory roles with regards to vaccine safety & effectiveness. Building public trust is step 1. Should be mandatory to have formal media training in these roles.
