We wish the new Romanian Antiphospholipid Syndrome group success. APS/Hughes Syndrome is a global disease without barriers. It’s extremely important experts are available to counsel, advise and manage affected patients and their relatives everywhere

Important study demonstrating that not every APS/Hughes syndrome patient is the same! Some APS patients are not anti coagulated on warfarin but may take aspirin or Plavix. The risk of re-thrombosis (more blood clots) is no different to those on full anti coagulation.

Our most recent publication on thrombosis recurrence and major bleeding risk in non-anticoagulated thrombotic antiphospholipid syndrome patients. We want to thank all APS ACTION members for their contributions.

Adrenal glands make essential for life hormone Cortisol. APS/Hughes Syndrome can induce haemorrhagic infarction (lack of blood supply) of Adrenals. Hey presto-no cortisol! Insidious, difficult to spot, CT scan, Synacthen test and Antiphospholipid antibody screen confirm diagnosis

1/6 Glad to share our latest publication, this time; the fascinating overlap of rheum and endo in our study on adrenal hemorrhage in APS. Incorporating cases from @MayoClinic and a systematic literature review. https://t.co/57xin3Gk4x

Interesting article by Evangelatos et al in previous post suggesting the risk of progression of atherosclerosis (“furring up” of the arteries) in APS is higher than healthy controls and even higher than in diabetes which already carries a substantial heart disease burden

In this article, our founder Prof. Graham Hughes discusses what needs to be done to improve the quality of life for Antiphospholipid (Hughes’) Syndrome patients 40 years after he first described the syndrome. Still many unresolved issues, but much hope these can be addressed.

For an overview of APS/Hughes Syndrome especially pertaining to men, please access this free access article. It’s an excellent article. Well, we would say that, as three of our Trustees wrote it…no bias, honest!

Headache, an all too common feature not just of APS/Hughes Syndrome, but also those who have the antibodies but have never had any thrombosis. Not routinely screened for and often related just like normal migraine, whereas blood thinning such as Aspirin is far more helpful
