I used to live in St John Henry Newman's room when I was a student at @TrinityOxford . There was a big plaque on the front door: NEWMAN ROOM. It was where a soon-to-be Doctor of the Church studied and slept. I reflect on that here:

Jesus After the Critics "Pagels’s book shows that an older confidence in the power of criticism to modernize faith by getting history right and removing the irrational, superstitious elements from Judaism and Christianity has waned".

My latest subby - on Pope Leo XVI's recent concern for how faith deals with technological/scientific development. Also deals with whether the Church of England helps you to believe in aliens, and how Einstein may have made miracles sound plausible again. Link below.

The right question. Reminds of the famous Wittgenstein remark to Anscombe: "And how would it look if the earth went round the sun?". Would the skeptic really be won over if accounts stated that the Risen Jesus' body, say, bubbled away into aether?.

Top drawer stuff. My little theology brain reads this as yet more confirmation that there really is no 'going back' to Christendom, as nice as some retro kicks are. The apparent 'religious re-emergence' we are seeing has to reckon with that much.
