As they say: some personal news. I've taken a buyout from the Los Angeles Times. My last day after 34+ years is scheduled for Feb. 27. Not sure what's next but I need to step back and take time to heal. Thanks to all who read me. (more)
So the TNT panel says Trevor Zegras should “tone it down” and not stand out…and then TNT puts a mike on…wait for it…Trevor Zegras? Hockey must be a great game because it survives despite the people who run it and broadcast it.
Dustin Brown will wear the captain’s C in his last regular-season game. The C is a big deal in hockey, in case you don’t know. It should never have been taken away from him.
Biles said she had no idea where she was in the air after her vault. Felt her head wasn’t in it and feared she might get hurt and spoil teammates’ medal chances if she continued.
Yes, the Golden Knights' pregame show is over the top. So? Every team in the Final the past few years has used gimmicks and on-ice projections. Heaven forbid people have fun at a game.
Tonight, we honor and celebrate the career of

Long-time sports columnist with the Los Angeles Times, and recipient of the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award in 2005, Helene’s work in covering this game -- through reporting and commentary – has helped increase the
The NHL plans to hold a "moment of reflection" before its each of its two scheduled playoff games tonight. On an unprecedented day in sports, the NHL flipped the puck over the glass.
One thing I couldn't fit into my NHL All-Star story: A kid reporter asked Auston Matthews if John Tavares still wears Maple Leaf pajamas (as in the photo Tavares tweeted when he signed with Toronto). Matthews, without missing a beat, said: "Yes. He wears the same pair."
So they let Nosek play before knowing his test result, and as a result potentially exposed his teammates and the Ducks to COVID. Tell me again that the NHL really cares about player safety.
My 99-year-old mom, recently recovered from COVID-19, told me today she had voted. If she can make the effort to vote, you can make the effort to vote.
The Kings have relieved coach John Stevens and assistant coach Don Nachbaur of their duties. More changes to come from Kings in an announcement in about 30 minutes.
It’s a five-OT 3-2 win for Minnesota-Duluth over North Dakota in NCAA hockey regional. Bulldogs go to the Frozen Four. 119th shot of the game. Gotta feel for North Dakota goalie Adam Scheel.
Security guard just told me I couldn’t take a picture of the Blues playing soccer in the hallway. Yeah, why promote your players and give more insight into what they do on a game day? Guessing the NBA wouldn’t say no to that.
Forgot my own work anniversary. On Nov. 6, 1989 I started working at the LA Times. Many years, stories, and columns later, the ride continues. Grateful to still be doing this. The technology changes but the importance of telling stories in a compelling way will always be vital.
MIKE MILBURY: “In light of the attention caused by my recent remark, I have decided to step away from my role at NBC Sports for the remainder of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. I do not want my presence to interfere with the athletes as they try to win the greatest trophy in sports.”
@THNKenCampbell
this has been happening for decades. I can remember outrage in the 1980s when Clark Gillies let his dog drink from the Cup. His response, if I recall correctly, was, "He's a very good dog." No one has died from eating out of the Cup after someone's dog did so.
Walking through concourse to Nadal- Berrettini semifinal. I feel a tug on my arm. Immediate thought: someone is trying to steal my wallet. I turn, ready to elbow this person—and it’s Wayne Gretzky. I didn’t elbow him.
Kershaw: “We’ve been the best team before and didn’t win.” Also says, “I don’t care about legacy. We won the World Series. The 2020 Dodgers won the World Series.” All those other past losses don’t matter, he said.
Drew Doughty (season-ending wrist injury) is on the trip. So is Sean Walker. Kings coach Todd McLellan said both asked him to be with the team, and he’s happy to have them.
I've been amazed by the number of people who have said they're surprised to see me at the Stanley Cup Final, given the dire situation of most newspapers. Thanks to sports editor
@ajrod
for recognizing that to be a big-league paper, we must cover this event. And more.
My take on Justin Turner's positive test and how Major League Baseball is lucky the World Series didn't have to go seven games: Column: Ripple effects from Justin Turner's positive coronavirus test could just be starting
NBC Sports: What does Mike Milbury bring to broadcasts that makes you think it's worthwhile to harbor him and his longstanding lack of taste and civility? Same guy said a few years ago he wanted to hurt a player "in a painful and permanent way." He wrote that off as a "joke" too.
On this day in 1993, Patrick Roy winked at Tomas Sandstrom after denying him a sure goal in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final

With Toronto and Edmonton reported to be hub cities, could the Stanley Cup be coming to a Canadian team for the first time since the Montreal Canadians in 1993?
Ryan Getzlaf said Ducks players have reached out to see if they can help families and victims of the Humboldt Hockey bus crash. He’s from Saskatchewan and knows the area of the crash well.
Thinking of and praying for Mike Bossy, who has entered palliative care after being treated for lung cancer. The purest goalscorer hockey has ever been blessed with, and an extraordinary player on the Islanders' extraordinary Cup teams. Wishing strength to him and his family.
Whoa. Kings win in OT. Good resilience (needed to overcome some terrible defensive zone coverage). Good responses by the Kings after that 7-0 mess in Buffalo.
Will Jim Montgomery's success to date with the Dallas Stars make NHL general managers more open to hiring college coaches? Maybe instead of endlessly recycling the same folks who have failed with other NHL teams?
Ducks GM Bob Murray hasn't wanted to fire coach Randy Carlyle, and at this point it probably won't make a difference. They're done. But Murray has to say something to fans and show he feels this is unacceptable. Fans would be happy with some kind of hope expressed for the future.
Must say that the
@GoldenKnights
have done an excellent job getting their logo and merchandise all over town. Good lesson in marketing in non-traditional market. Buzz about them is strong.
No moves by the Kings on NHL trade deadline day. Apparently, Rob Blake is digging in and counting on injured players making big impacts after they heal. I don’t think that’s going to work, but we shall see…
In 2021-22, the Kings lost to Edmonton in seven games. Last season, they lost to Edmonton in six. This season, they could be out in five. And that after pushing the cap limit to acquire Dubois, who has been a bust. They’re taking a step backward, not forward.
On April 9, 2009,
@latimessports
published a letter I wrote (in the form of a column) to Kings owner Phil Anschutz. His response arrived today. Never knew he had a sense of humor…thanks to
@LAKings
for this.
Trying to count how many Stanley Cup Finals this is for me. Got in on last few of Islanders' run while at Newsday; I missed 90-91-92 while covering baseball and also '98, '04 and '13 but otherwise can't think of any I missed since then...Yes, I'm old. But here to tell the tales!
He also said he had spoken with Kings executives and that in the future the ice will be prepared for an 11:10am start. Said as a venue operator for 35+ years he was shocked this was an issue. “It must have been a slow day as regards to news in Edmonton.”

It deserves to be touched and admired and hugged and have the names traced by people's fingers. You want to keep it behind glass forever? Then you lose the human connection.
