playing around with Overpass and OSM and Mapshaper and all that jazz and I have decided that my brain is way way way too small to be a cartographer. (but these maps of @UnionParkDC and known parking lots in OSM is pretty neat, big YIKES for Midway)

This week when @DeniseDSLu saw me making maps in QGIS and for the 100th time said "hey you know mapshaper can do that" I finally relented and asked her to teach me 😌

Does anyone here know if it's possible to clip stuff in mapshaper using polylines instead of polygons?

Then close QGIS (I also zip the files). Open the file in Mapshaper (if you need to reproject, go to the console). Quick note: type in the command -clean before the next step. I simplify the shapefile because 10% or 15% works well enough for Wiki.

@AugustaPatriot @Thorongil16 I tested it and got the same error as you, but when dragging into mapshaper and exporting it gets fixed.

new feature added: highlight indian states where the species is found in the wild shape files -> mapshaper (simplify) -> topojson -> d3.js -> save svg

ArcGIS is great for visuals and map integration, but I think I prefer the combination of Simple Map and MapShaper. It keeps things clean, light, and easy to work with -especially when preparing map data before bringing it into Power BI. Maybe another project will make me explore

every map has the same static basemap png, there's a mobile version that gets served up w bigger labels on smaller screens. these are made with a mapshaper script, and then just positioned w css transforms to their 'bounding box' for that step.

地図にベジェ曲線で路線描くのめんどくさいからなんとかならないかってChatGPTに聞いたら、Overpass TurboでOpenRailwayMapのデータ取得して、Mapshaperで必要な箇所切り出してSVG化するとよいって言われた。なるほど。

国土数値情報から取り出した飯山線の路線データをQGIS経由でSVG化してAffinity Designerに放り込んだら、アンカーポイント大渋滞で表示が崩れてしまった。QGIS上では綺麗に表示されてたんだけどなぁ。結局はMapshaperでGeoJsonファイルの簡略化をする羽目になりそう。
