April 30, 1944, Lt(jg) John Burns in his OS2U Kingfisher floatplane braved the Truk Lagoon under fire, rescued multiple downed pilots from rafts in rough seas, kept his leaking plane afloat until the sub USS Tang saved them all. Earned the Navy Cross. More details in comments.🫡
