THIS is why we need #mediareparations NOW. These businesses are still profiting from the exploitation & criminalizing of BIPOC people. @nytimes You shouldn't be asking for refunds, you should be asking, "How do we repair the damage?" #reparativejournalism

Scoop: @najournalists asked @nytimes to apologize for racist, stereotypical coverage. NAJA President @FrancineCompton says NYT refused and asked for refunds on their $55 NAJA memberships. Times reporters are not at #NAJA22.

2b. In plain terms: Our timelines, playlists, shared links and more tell stories about us, and the world around us. The same is true of media from bygone eras. #ReparativeJournalism #CollegeMedia21

I'd suggest three things if you decide to take on such project: 1. If possible, send the person you'll be interviewing copies of the student & local newspapers from their era. It might jog some memories. #ReparativeJournalism #CollegeMedia21

3. In your reconstruction, consider this key question: What would have your outlet's coverage from that time have looked like if it were truly inclusive? If the staff has been committed to reflecting the dignity of every person's humanity? #ReparativeJournalism #CollegeMedia21

2. Research the history of that era. If it's so far gone that most who lived through it have passed away, approach it as a reconstruction. "Interview" documents from that time. Consider any and ALL media from that era. #ReparativeJournalism #CollegeMedia21

The thing is, the people, communities and stories missing from our publications' past weren't "invisible," they were ignored. #ReparativeJournalism #CollegeMedia21 #ProfLife #MediaDiversity

I’n gonna write this book on #reparativejournalism. I’m gonna design a curriculum. You don’t have to believe in or subscribe to my arguments. But do not expect me to spend valuable time and energy trying to “convince” you to do so.

Doing the research to address a legacy of marginalization and dismissal can be tough. Essentially, it challenges us to seek the invisible. #ReparativeJournalism #CollegeMedia21 #ProfLife #MediaDiversity

Ooh, one last thing: To make the connection between putting #ReparativeJournalism into practice, and thinking about how media objects tell stories, I highly recommend Dr. @LeeHumphreys' book! https://t.co/ufkzShs5lf First chapter here: https://t.co/EkX6OIkTeL

There was one question I missed, which I'd like to address now: "For student journalists looking to make reparations, how would you recommend doing the research about which stories have been ignored historically?" #ReparativeJournalism #CollegeMedia21 #ProfLife #MediaDiversity

We call these "small histories." [needs citation; i will find & post it later] They are rich with leads for *more* untold stories; for projects that can take weeks, a semester, a school year or more, depending on time available. #ReparativeJournalism #CollegeMedia21 #ProfLife

This is such a well-reported, critically necessary story. I look forward to teaching it in my yet-in-development #ReparativeJournalism course.

journalists rarely talk about how we find our sources. much of it is ego — you think you get good stories because *you’re* good. it means we don’t hear about the exploitative way many demand access to poor, non white people during crises. new for @CJR: https://t.co/EUqwUgkbw4
