I assume that you've covered this explanation for the origin of Pompey for Portsmouth already?
.@mikewatso I too think it far-fetched. [preferring the CHart reference explanation. When we still had a Navy, the slang terms for the three major naval stations of England were 'Pompey, Guzzle and Chats'. 'Chats' was obviously Chatham, and 'Guzzle', more mysteriously, was.
