A national disgrace. On this day in 1942, the Dutch ship Van Imhoff sinks after a Japanese attack. The crew saves itself but leaves hundreds of German and Austrian civilian internees from the Dutch East Indies locked inside. Almost no one survives. For years, it was kept silent.
