In 1095 CE, Pope Urban II (pictured below) ws contacted in desperate need of help. He called for a military expedition to retake the Holy Land from the Turks also known as "infidels."

The Holy Land sits at the intersection of three continents. It is even the home of some of the oldest civilizations in the WORLD! The location alone is a reason to settle there, considering the Mediterranean Sea is bordering The Holy Land!

The Second Crusade: 1147-1149... Muslim forces regrouped and attacked Edessa. The Teutonic Knights, The Knights Hospitaller, and the Knights Templar rode forth under the banner of the Second Crusade. The King of France and Emperor of Germany pledged and fought for the holy land.

The Fourth Crusade: 1202-1204... In 1198, Pope Innocent III (pictured below) called for a new Crusade but failed to rouse any monarchs. The Crusaders set out for the Holy Land only to be diverted by Venetian Lords. They failed to retake the Holy Land.

There were many Crusades as I mentioned before. The First Crusade : 1096-1099... This was led by Godfrey of Bouillon. They marched through lands held by the Turks. The first Crusade was set up in Edessa. Godfrey died, His brother left Edessa and became the king of Jerusalem.

The Third Crusade: 1187-1192... The Turkic Saladin led the Seljuks and succeeded in fragmented Muslim armies of Southwest Asia & North Africa. To Saladin, Christians are infidels that had to be evicted. The Christian's failed to retake the Land, Muslims remained in control.

The Final Crusade: 1217-1272... Led by King Andrew II, he went to the Holy Land & Egypt, & failed. Angry at the outcome, Frederick II led the 6th crusade, it succeeded in retaking the Kingdom of Jerusalem in 1228. After 1244 Jerusalem would never fall under Christian rule.
