This project is an attempt to preserve and revitalise Arvanitika: a nigh-forgotten Pelasgian dialect threatened with extinction. It's a work of unparalleled ambition that no one else has attempted before, despite the simplicity of the poetry within. And this is only the beginning.

I would also like to add that the book contains translations in 6 (!) languages for each and every poem, in #Albanian, #Greek, English, German and French, as well as a preface in both Albanian and English. The book is therefore accessible to almost everyone.

Another #poem in #Arvanitika -- or, as it is often known, "gljuha e zogut," or the language of birds. Consequently, the title is "Këngë e ornithologut", meaning the Ornithologist's Song. #tanka #poetry #arbëror.

Probably my most important poem yet: the Bourtzi is an island fortress in Nafplion that served as a prison after the Greek revolution. #Arvanite general Kolokotronis was imprisoned there on charges of treason from 1823-'25, and lost his sight upon release.

With the help of Albanian, Latin and Medieval Greek words which I've already begun implementing, I'm trying to recreate a modern #Arvanitic idiom that's as close to authentic as possible.

#poetry is the best way to rebuild a lost vocabulary, and Arvanitika, being a similarly forgotten language, seemingly stuck in the middle ages, lends itself exceptionally well to such a poetic endeavour, given its lyrical nature and inherent sense of irony. 🧵.

But that's beside the point. This work is intended to reform, revitalise and renew interest in #Arvanitika. A big part of this is a reform in syntax and vocabulary. I've already created a spelling table explaining how I use the Greek Alphabet: 🧵

The importance of this work cannot be understated. Not to toot my own horn, but I am, at the moment of writing, the first and only Arvanite poet in history actually writing in Arvanitika. Plenty of old songs still exist, of course, but there's no way to identify who wrote them.🧵.

In the link below, for example, you will find a translation I've made for Goethe's poem "Klärchen's Lied". This was a particularly significant challenge for me. Rhymes couldn't be carried over, but I at least wanted my version to have the same impact. 🧵.

As it stands, I'm mostly writing haikus, since I'm still learning the language, as this helps me form simple sentences within its confines, which provide both a challenge and a guideline for me to work with. I have, however, also tried to expand to other forms, on occasion: 🧵.
