Hey Microsoft Word, some casual anti-LGBTQ+ nonsense in your suggestion here. I'm not showing the whole sentence (to avoid revealing the project I'm working on), but this plural of "mothers" is correct. Ya know, because people can have more than one? #ConsciousLanguage

Interesting to think about. Sometimes the non-violent option turns the expression into something very banal here, but there are other sparky alternatives (other than the violence-tinged one). [Via: @ConsciousStyles.#ConsciousLanguage #editing

MS Word suggesting I correct 'their' to 'his or her'!?!?! #InclusivityFail. I'll stick with 'their'. Thank you very much. #genderneutral #InclusivityLanguage #ConsciousLanguage

“a female leader” ➡️ “a leader”. Unless you’re including “male” with descriptions of men (which you probably aren’t, because that would sound pretty odd), there’s no need to describe women as “female.” #AmEditing #ConsciousLanguage.

As an editor, I find ableist terms hiding in so many places, from business docs to picture book texts. But there's always another word available, and that's why I value @autistichoya's list of explanations & alternatives. Check it out: #ConsciousLanguage.

"she lost her mind" (in the context of an argument) ➡️ "she flew into a rage" (e.g.). It's common (and can be super effective) to use hyperbolic language for emphasis or for humor—just make sure the hyperbole isn't stigmatizing mental illness. #AmEditing #ConsciousLanguage.

Your friendly reminder that #ConsciousLanguage isn't about being "PC," "policing language," or imposing "totalitarian thought.". Whether you personally find a term offensive or not, once you learn that some readers will, then you have a choice to make. (1/4).

☞ Just a reminder that if you refer to reproductive healthcare as “women’s healthcare,” that contributes to the erasure of trans men and people of other genders who can also get pregnant. #ConsciousLanguage.

If your #OpenSource project is replacing problematic language (blacklist, slave, etc) are you using a particular label/tag in your patches and tickets? I'm considering "#ConsciousLanguage" but don't want to invent something new if there's already something in common usage.

mothers (in a childbirth context) ➡️ birthing parents. People tend to get riled about this, but when you're referring generally to folks who carry and birth babies, "mothers" just isn't going to encompass everyone. Birthing parents can be any gender. #ConsciousLanguage #AmEditing.

Question for #ConsciousLanguage folks: Is there a preferable/alternative term to "low-income"? Or is there anything wrong with the term? Asking for a corporate report.
