Meet the Fokkers! Flying together this #FormationFriday are WWI replicas: the Dr.I in the lead, followed by the D.VII. Both serving near the end of World War I, these aircraft highlight varying approaches to fighter design as triplanes gave way to biplanes, which would

Only eleven of these biplanes were ever made. And one of them is displayed right here in Science City. In the 1920s, Butler Manufacturing produced pre-fabricated steel buildings, including aircraft hangars. They expanded into aircraft manufacturing and debuted the Butler

While the Fattle was a great improvement over the biplanes it replaced, at the start of WW2 it was vastly outdated: it was too heavy, slow and had inadequate defensive armament, leaving it unable to cope with both enemy fighters and flak. For example, in an Allied attack over

The Fokker Eindekker was an unusual design for its era, as it was a monoplane (most WW1 designs were biplanes). In the era before simulations and with aeronautical engineering in its infancy, the "safe bet" was to have biplanes, which were stronger. https://t.co/3q3MWca6p7

This rare U.S. Navy newsreel shows the battleship Utah during sea trials, being operated by remote control from another ship, presaging the modern era of the drone. The newsreel also shows an attack exercise using biplanes launched from aircraft carriers, and spotting planes

@MalcolmNance @MarioNawfal They just can’t do anything right eh Admiral Nance? We must’ve been out of 1950s era biplanes and are using what is in current stock. You bitch about the missiles so they go a little more low tech and you’re still bitching.

I'm gonna try and keep it on the level with you since reports about the Iranian navy being destroyed are coming in. But this girl in Boston is still the only actively serving vessel in the U.S. Navy to sink another ship in surface combat.

The most feared battleship in the Atlantic → found after 31 hours lost → attacked by WWI-era biplanes → one lucky torpedo jams the rudder → 2,800+ shells fired → she STILL won't sink. Did the British sink her, or did her own crew? Find out in the Sinking of the Bismarck:

@Frasier67Blank @eXcretaDeBull Yes, at the time before catapult launches, only biplanes gave sufficient lift to carry a torpedo from carriers. Monoplane replacements were in development, but not ready for service.
