I find bumble bees hard enough to identify but this one might be easy for the experts? I’ve never seen it before and I spend more time than is healthy watching bees in the garden. Please help.

Who ate my curlew eggs? My best guess is jackdaws as regular mob of them in same field. Crows were controlled. Puncture holes in shell would fit. We can’t control jackdaws anymore.

The fine line between failure and success. Both adults off nest feeding together this morning . Sure enough, nest had been predated. Is it too late in the season for the pair to try again?

I mow the lawn in May. But I mow it long all year. Dandelions can set seed 2/3 days later under this regime. Mowed last weekend. Am currently watching bullfinches, greenfinches, goldfinches all feasting on dandelion seeds. #NoMowMay

Mole hills can be useful for propogating wild flowers in a meadow. This one has six species on it: yarrow, speedwell, clover, pignut and celandine #wildflowermeadow

Finally. Having changed the grazing regime 2016 to allow some rough areas to develop, with @Ruralpay support, we have our first curlew nest in 25 years. Yes!!

I wish I could show you in more detail the covey of 14 grey partridges under that blue hopper over there. Deep satisfaction. Especially as I have two other coveys under similar feeders on our small grass/woodland farm. Not classic GP country but if you try hard enough…..

Always try to leave lots of #grassmargins and then delay/reduce grazing aftermath to encourage tussocky species and focus grazing pressure away from the margins.
Long grass has many benefits: moist, cool & sheltered at its base, producing abundant flowers, pollen & seeds. Beetles, caterpillars, grasshoppers – all benefit, & then so do birds, bats and others. #fwagse #fwagsoutheast #grassmargins #wildlife #conservation #farming #advice
