We may never truly comprehend the number of dedicated public servants we lose each year b/c they are forced to make the impossible choice between preserving their integrity and advancing their careers.

Additionally, leadership must thoroughly examine and reinforce chamber regulations intended to shield staffers from this type of mistreatment. NY's political environment often fosters & sometimes even promotes toxic, hostile, and retaliatory workplaces.

The allegations against Senator Mannion are grave and must not be ignored. The Senate Ethics Committee must initiate an immediate investigation that safeguards the staffers' identities while acknowledging the trauma they have endured.

...especially when the perpetrator holds a position of power. However, holding power abusers accountable without fear of reprisal should be the norm, not the exception.

“The graphic accounts detailed in the former staffers' joint letter regarding Sen. John Mannion are absolutely appalling and deeply troubling. We fully support the writers and unequivocally believe them. It takes immense courage to publicly disclose such traumatic experiences...

A note from our Founder & Executive Director @saraziff 🧵 I'm overjoyed to share that today, for the first time, the New York Assembly and Senate both passed the #FashionWorkersAct! Now, the bill heads to @GovKathyHochul's desk to sign it into law.

NEW: Groups ask for @NewYorkStateAG appeal to be granted, and Court of Appeals to swiftly decide NYS ethics commission case. The alarming logic of the recent appellate decision would create an imperial Governor. https://t.co/ZM9ZdJx2yQ @harassment_free

A big deal! Too often NDAs and non-disparagement agreements prevent survivors from coming forward. It's time to ban them in NY. My bill A2555A with @agounardes would allow us to do so and protect victims @LiftOurVoicesUS @harassment_free

The traumatic & financial impacts of sexual harassment cannot be overstated. Here in NY, the Legislature has passed numerous reforms since 2018, mostly due to the advocacy of survivors and @harassment_free. These oversights in access to justice must be tackled next.

Contradictions of NY state laws means Cuomo—a confirmed harasser can be reimbursed for his court costs while survivors are confined by anti-corruption laws from accepting pro bono representation in any proceeding. More from me & the @NWDefenseLeague:

@GovKathyHochul I wrote so much about this when I was still reporting. Congrats to @AravellaSimotas and Lydia Cuomo, in particular, who pushed this bill for years. Lydia relived her brutal attack to make the compelling case and Aravella was a bulldog on it during her time in the NYS Assembly

Cuomo enacted this carefully-worded law right after the resurgence of the #MeToo movement. The Sexual Harassment Working Group knew it would do nothing to hold abusers accountable, and now we've seen it in action. We're still fighting for a #HarassmentFreeAlbany.
