One year of baseline surveys on the Somerset Frome complete! 🔬 We will continue to monitor phosphates, nitrates & bacteria to identify sources of pollution. Ultimately we want to work with local landowners & businesses to rectify issues and clean up the river! (For the 🦫🐟🦆)

🏚️ Research shows that at 10%, Biodiversity Net Gain will only maintain the status quo. It is providing valuable funding for new nature restoration projects but is not delivering significant gains for species

🌳 Transparency and integrity issues within the carbon market pose a risk to the nascent biodiversity markets. Many companies are hesitant to invest early in biodiversity, which is new and more complex, for fear that they may later be exposed for bad practice.

💰 The ‘carbon plus’ route is the only viable option for securing private investment in nature restoration via voluntary markets at present. This is achieved when biodiversity benefits are bundled with carbon credits, attracting a premium. Storytelling is a powerful tool.

🤝 We need to aggregate, scale up and unify to build a simpler and more accessible market

📈 For the biodiversity markets to grow, we need a greater volume of investable projects. The integrity/quality of projects in the UK is not the blocker. Over-investing in baselining or land management interventions will not overcome the lack of demand.

📉 Confidence in the voluntary biodiversity credits market is declining, with some feeling that bespoke credits tailored to buyers’ needs are the only viable way forwards. The market for more generalised biodiversity credits is not yet fully clear.

I spent the weekend camping @HealRewilding’s Somerset site whilst shooting a documentary about their fantastic progress. I was lucky enough to be pointed at the sky for the #aurora and we couldn’t believe our eyes, here is a Timelapse of what we saw.

Great start to the week ☀️ Out with @WiltsWildlife Water Team looking at opportunities for wetland restoration. River banks burst and water showing us where it wants to go! Lots of chat about extreme rainfall. Eight wettest winter on record. Is this a one-off or the new norm?

This role will be varied, encompassing habitat & species surveys, project management, stakeholder engagement activities and more. It will provide the perfect background for progression into the conservation sector, particularly for someone with an interest in freshwater habitats
