Or perhaps there's an outstanding 10/10 production but because the artist name attached to it is viewed a certain way by that particular A&R, it doesn't get signed.

An average record by an artist who is perceived as “cool” by A&R or is having a moment will get signed.

And this works in different ways….
I think record labels should listen to demos anonymously, with no artist name attached, so that it is the music doing the talking with zero perception and bias involved.

A tune could be average but because the name attached to it is currently viewed as “cool” by that particular A&R or they’re having a moment, it’s signed when if that same record was sent via another artist it wouldn’t.
