So the Warriors turn James Wiseman into Gary Payton II at the deadline.
The same Gary Payton II they could've simply re-signed this past off-season with early bird rights on the same deal he eventually signed with Portland while keeping Wiseman.
Speechless.
For anyone curious in terms of the difference in cost.
Combined 22/23 salary of Gary Payton II + Otto Porter Jr: $14.3M
Combined 22/23 salary of Donte DiVincenzo + JaMychal Green: $6.3M
Plus a luxury tax difference of: $52.6M

Gui Santos with a funny quote on the news of Leandro Barbosa leaving to join the Sacramento Kings staff: “When I see him I will say to him, ‘man you don’t like me?’ I came here and you leave?”
Warriors roster as of now:

Quinndary Weatherspoon might just force his way onto the Warriors' 15-man roster at this point. He could fill a role for them as a POA defender and off-ball cutter, on top of being a talented scorer.
In the G League last year he averaged:
25.3ppg
6.7rpg
3.4apg
2.0spg
57.7% 2PT
As of today, Shaun Livingston's salary is officially off of the Warriors' books.
Livingston was waived and stretched on July 10th, 2019 with $2M guaranteed salary left on the final year of his deal which was spread over the next 3 seasons.
Warriors have no dead cap currently.
JaMychal Green cleared waivers as of 2pm today and can now officially sign with the Warriors.
He'll bring the roster to 13. They will need to add one more before they can officially sign McClung (assuming his deal contains an Exhibit 9 which protects the team in case of injury).
Warriors moves that I haven’t really understood:
-Bringing Mac McClung to training camp (especially without an E10)
- Waiving Trevion Williams so early in pre-season
- Signing Anthony Lamb and (still) not addressing the allegations against him
- Cutting Quinndary Weatherspoon
If all goes to plan, Santa Cruz will be must-watch TV for all Warriors fans this season.
PG: Ryan Rollins
SG: Lester Quiñones
SF: Patrick Baldwin Jr.
PF: Gui Santos
C: Trevion Williams
As of today, the Warriors can officially begin negotiating on extensions with Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins.
However, don't expect much movement on those fronts right away. They have until Oct. 17 to find a deal with Poole in lieu of him entering restricted free agency.
It’s looking like the Warriors are going to start California Classic with:
G: Quinndary Weatherspoon
G: Lester Quiñones
F: Moses Moody
F: Gui Santos
C: Selom Mawugbe
No Kuminga, Wiseman, Baldwin Jr. or Rollins.
Lester Quiñones tonight against the Pelicans:
26pts
2rbs
2asts
2stls
8/17 FG
4/10 3PT
6/8 FT
Through four games of Summer League, he is averaging: 22ppg, 3apg on 48% FG and 47% 3PT.
Watching Bay Area-born and bred Juan Toscano-Anderson evolve from a G-League local player tryout to an NBA Champion and fan favorite over the course of these last four seasons was a joy.
Will be a fan forever and always. Best of luck in the city of angels
@juanonjuan10

With Otto Porter Jr. going to Toronto and Nemanja Bjleica potentially to Fenerbahçe, the Warriors will probably add a stretch 4/5 in free agency. Options:

Rodney Hood
Paul Millsap
NBA Free Agency begins today at 3PM PST.

The Thunder will be paying JaMychal Green $5,571,403 to not play for them this season.
The Warriors will be paying JaMychal Green $1,836,090 (with the league covering an additional $792,507) to play for them this season.
Gotta love buyouts.
JaMychal Green gave up $2,628,597 in his buyout with the Oklahoma City Thunder, a league source tells
@spotrac
.
That amount equals what he'll get in his new veteran minimum deal with the Golden State Warriors.
Big loss for the Warriors as they lose their Director of Player Development in Jama Mahlalela who’s been working specifically with both Wiggins and Kuminga as well as overseeing their whole development structure and being in charge of rotations last season.
The Toronto Raptors are hiring Wizards assistant Pat Delany and Warriors assistant Jama Mahlalela as top assistant coaches on Darko Rajakovic’s new staff, sources tell ESPN.
After letting Payton II walk the Warriors should be more than willing to use all of their $6.4M MLE in order to supplement the roster with a quality veteran rotational player and there are still a number of them out there who could make sense as additions.
If Looney isn't starting that means Chris Paul wasn't willing to accept a bench role and they're appeasing him, which is a problem.
CP3 will have a huge role off the bench and start a handful of games, but they had the best starting 5 in the league last year, keep it that way.
"Glenn Robinson III shared that he plans to resume his NBA career and is preparing for workouts scheduled with NBA teams next week in Las Vegas. Teams like Milwaukee, Boston and Golden State have all expressed interest, he said."
NEW: Glenn Robinson III has been away the NBA for the past two seasons, but he's ramping up for a return.
He shares what he's been up to and what's fueling the return in an exclusive interview with
@FieldhouseFiles
:
That’s pretty wild. What a fall off for Wood.
Even though he’s not the perfect fit for the Warriors, for a minimum that might be too good of value to pass up on if he’s willing to accept a reduced rotational role.
Could really juice their bench.
If the Warriors retain Looney at $10M and GP2 at $8M, then fill out the roster with two vet mins, Ryan Rollins, and leave the 14th spot open they’re looking at a roster cost of $410M ($196M salary + $214M tax)
Every additional dollar on that is counted at x7.25 for tax.
Weatherspoon only playing 18 minutes tonight and not seeing any action in the 4th kind of feels like a sign that the Warriors have seen enough and know what they have there. Could bode well for his 15-man roster chances.
Tonight: 9pts, 3rbs, 1stl, 4/4 FG
Asked Moses Moody post game if the Warriors coaching staff has communicated anything they want to see from him as he tries to work into the rotation:
“Just getting out there. Getting a chance to play is the main thing I’ve heard. You can’t get better without playing basketball.”
JaMychal Green's veteran minimum is worth $2,628,597 with a cap/tax hit of $1,836,090. He will become an unrestricted free agent in 2023 with non-bird rights.
Warriors roster is at 15 players including Two-Way QO-pending Quinndary Weatherspoon and un-signed draftee Ryan Rollins.
Warriors training camp roster has 17/20 players penciled in as of now. They still have three open spots left, one of which is Iguodala's if he wants to play one more year. Expect the other spots to be filled by camp invites, Warriors are essentially done in Free Agency.
Lacob on roster cost: "You were throwing numbers out like $400-500M. Those numbers are not even remotely possible. They’re just not. I’m already in trouble with the rest of the league."
"We kind of blew a hole in the system and it’s not a good look from the league's perspective"
Some remaining free agents I could see the Warriors adding to the last spot they need to fill:
Derrick Jones Jr.
T.J. Warren
Juan Toscano-Anderson
Garrett Temple
Danny Green
Terrence Ross
Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk
Davon Reed
Javonte Green
Nerlens Noel
Bismack Biyombo
Blake Griffin
You can really see the strides Gui Santos has made as a player from last summer to now. A lot more aggressive offensively, confident shooting, showing real poise on both ends of the court.
His contract situation in Brazil is a hurdle, but getting him on a two-way would be ideal.
Gui Santos does a really nice job of attacking the paint and either finishing under pressure, getting to the line, or finding an open teammate.
Impressive floor game on display here. A lot to like.
Estimated yearly breakdown of Jordan Poole’s 4yr/$140M with $123M guaranteed and $17M in incentives (if distributed evenly and backloaded with 8% raises):
23/24: $27.5M (up to $31.3M)
24/25: $29.7M (up to $33.8M)
25/26: $31.8M (up to $36.3M)
26/27: $34M (up to $38.8M)
2027: UFA
Jul 6 | Free Agency Starts (9AM PT)
Jul 6 | Jordan Poole, Andrew Wiggins, and Klay Thompson become extension eligible
Jul 7-17 | Las Vegas Summer League
Aug 3 | Draymond Green becomes extension eligible
Getting a lot of questions on if the Warriors could potentially put Gui Santos on their roster given that he is still under contract in Brazil.
Still doing research on this since there are many intracices involved, but sharing my current understanding to those interested.
IMO: Warriors should wait for the Wizards to buy out Gallinari and sign him to the 14th spot taking a gamble on him coming off an ACL tear and looking remotely close to what he was in Atlanta.
He’d be the most realistic option for the OPJ role as a floor spacing, big wing.
Summer League Thoughts 5 games in:
- Weatherspoon's defense has been elite and he really should get a 15-man spot
- McClung's playing his way into an Exhibit 10 to battle in camp for a two-way
- Quiñones is intriguing but people are sleeping on him because he hasn't shot well
It’s so embarrassing how the same teams that directly benefit financially from teams like the Warriors paying ridiculous amounts of luxury tax are at the same time pressing the league to limit teams spending so they don’t look bad for not matching it and building good teams.
Just a reminder: Lester Quiñones is a restricted free agent with a Two-Way qualifying offer ($75k gtd.).
The only way for another NBA team to try to poach him would be to submit an offer sheet the Warriors wouldn't or couldn't match, starting at his minimum salary.

Remember seeing a report during the 2021 offseason that the Warriors were interested in Love if he were to be bought out and have been pursuing him for years.
While he doesn’t address their defensive concerns, he’d fit seamlessly as a stretch big option with passing chops.

Andre Iguodala's veteran minimum is worth $2,905,851 with a cap/tax hit of $1,836,090. He will become an unrestricted free agent in 2023 with early bird rights.
The Warriors training camp roster is now full with 14 guaranteed contracts, 2 two-ways, and 4 training camp invites.
Wouldn't mind if the Warriors still took a look at some veteran wings. If Iguodala retires, maybe you invite a few on an Exhibit 9 training camp deal to compete for a spot:
Wayne Ellington
Jeremy Lamb
Tony Snell
Rodney Hood
Ben McLemore
E'Twaun Moore
Abdel Nader
Tyreke Evans
The Warriors basically got nothing asset-wise out of the 2nd pick in the 2020 draft and now Jordan Poole (+additional assets) nets them.....Chris Paul.....who was almost waived a week ago.

Hell of a PR day for the Warriors between signing a player with sexual assault allegations and two of their marquee players having a practice altercation.
Sad, but at the same time really happy for Gary Payton II to get this deal. He spent years grinding his way through the G League on $35k contracts, with 10-Days and two-ways here and there trying to stick in the NBA.
Now he has a $28M deal and deserves every single penny.
Quinndary Weatherspoon continues to find ways to impress every time he touches the court.
He really just needs more opportunities at this point. Genuinely could be the next find for the Warriors to break out. Expecting him to continue his productive cameos this season.
With the conclusion of the G League season the Golden State Warriors have recalled Patrick Baldwin Jr. from Santa Cruz.
Additionally two-way player Lester Quiñones will be eligible to play in all of the Warriors’ 7 remaining regular season games. Ty Jerome can play in 3 of them.
Report out of Brazil today reaffirming the expectation that Gui Santos will suit up for the Santa Cruz Warriors this season on a G League deal as a draft rights player.
Allows the Warriors to develop him hands-on while maintaining his NBA rights without offering him an NBA deal.

If the Warriors don't use the 14th spot on a big, but still want to add some size to the roster for insurance/emergency, Giles might be an interesting option to look at for them on a two-way deal. Would be a solid enough fit as a capable passer with NBA experience.
Hoping Patrick Baldwin Jr. gets some run these next 3 games with Anthony Lamb sidelined and if Andrew Wiggins is still unavailable to play.
PBJ’s been productive in limited minutes and offers that shooting+size Kerr likes in his lineups. Let’s see what he’s got.
So it seems like the Warriors will wait to see if someone like Danilo Gallinari hits free agency for the 14th spot and otherwise might just bring some Juan Toscano-Anderson/Glenn Robison III type of vets to compete for it in camp.
Add look at a Harry Giles type big on a two-way?

Love this pick up. Exactly the type of high upside young big worth taking a flier on with a two-way. Will be an excellent fit who will get a chance to learn from the very player he modeled his game after in Draymond Green.

. The former Rockets first-round pick is coming off averaging 8.2 points and 4 rebounds for Spain in the FIBA World Cup.
Feels like the new CBA is basically pushing high tax teams into selling low on their players in order to get off long term salary to clear up their books moving forward. First Poole, now Collins.
Forced parity we could call it? Leading to some pretty drastic moves.
