And guess what happens if we go down 1% ten periods in a row? You'd expect to lose something less than 10% because each decrease is slightly smaller. But no, we're down 10%. That's the beauty of compound interest.

Addendum worth noting: the same applies if we go up first then down 10%, we're still 1% short.
