This afternoon, the LFB placed into service it’s third 64m TL at Wimbledon Fire Stn in SW London.
This follows an extensive period of training & it joins the two other 64m TL’s in the fleet based @ Dagenham & Old Kent Road Fire Stns.

Sir Micheal Snyder, Metropolitan Grand Master officially handed over the first of two 64 metre TL’s to London Fire Commissioner Andy Roe today. The vehicles have been funded by London Freemasons following a £2.5 million donation
I often get asked ‘why are you photographing the new pumps’ & I always answer I’m recording Brigade history.. just like I did 31 years ago when I took these photos at B26 Old Kent Road.. these were on the run appliances not preserved ones!

With the new Command Unit’s starting to go frontline, I thought I’ll show my age & post some pics of the appliances I’ve snapped in the role before.. pics are dated from the 80’s through to the late 90’s.. enjoy!
From 1973 to the present day, these are the appliances used as the Brigades ET’s.. now known as FRU’s. Back in 1978 there was 8 ET’s spread across London, since then the number has increased & decreased to 14 in use today..

As the year draws to a end, I would like to thank all the Firefighters, both home & abroad, who welcomed me into their stations & kindly moved appliances for photos.

Mercedes Mk3 FRU’s continues in London. Crew training is currently taking place & none are on the run so far, however, FRU35 was recently seen at Heston Fire Station in West London.

The Brigade’s 64m TL will be the highest in the country when they go into service later in the year, but in 1990 six of these entered service - the Volvo FL10-Angloco-Bronto 33m ALP. This one was at A33 Tottenham

A busy evening for LFB Firefighters & Control staff with a 10PF & 15PF occurring at the same time in SW & SE London. These images are of the 15PF in Erith, where crews battled a warehouse blaze with assistance from Kent Fire Rescue

This means all the frontline TL’s are on the Scania chassis with two of the Mercedes Econic TL’s remaining in the reserve fleet.

12 years separate these photos of Old Kent Fire Stn in Saff London. In that time, the Stn has been rebuilt, lost its 2nd pump & gained completely new appliances. The 32m TL will be replaced by a new 64m version later in the year.

With even more Mk3 Atego pumps going into service.. it’s nice to look back and see what London used to have 32 years ago!. This was the Shelvoke pumping appliance which was the last type of LFB pump able to carry an escape ladder..

Originally delivered as Light Rescue Units back in 1991; these were converted and used as Command Support Units instead, replacing the Range Rovers that came into service in the late 80’s

Interesting news via email this morning, that the LFB have bought a number of the former Scottish FRS Aerial Rescue Pumps to boost the aerial capability in the East End.. proposed allocations at the moment are Poplar & Leytonstone..
Another ex LFB appliance seen in Malta, but sadly now in the graveyard, is this Volvo FL614-Carmichael, Fire Rescue Unit.
FRU 5 was allocated to East Ham Fire Stn in East London from 1992 until around 2004.

With the next generation of cars to be used by Station Commanders starting to rollout throughout the Brigade.. who remembers the Mini’s used during the 2012 London Olympics & stayed on fleet for a number of years afterwards?

6 pumps from Dockhead, Old Kent Rd, Whitechapel, Shoreditch, Dowgate & Shadwell; were called to a smell of burning at “The Shard” this morning. The cause was due to overheating electrical components.

Seen at Barking Fire Station in East London, are this Mercedes Atros Bulk Foam Unit & Mercedes Hose Laying Unit, both dating from 2010.
The BFU’s are now due for replacement, while the HLU’s are due to be refurbished.

On the subject of ‘being old’ here is one of my photos taken in 1988 at a 6 Pump scrapyard fire on Deptford’s ground.. note the uniform & that pump was a brand new Dodge-Saxon on a E plate!
Swinging the lamp now... but 33 years ago, these Dennis F131 pumps formed part of the B Div reserve fleet, & were frequently on the run and photographed at my local station - B26 Old Kent Road
The 64m TL’s are due to enter service later this year, but in 1991 these were the latest edition to the LFB’s aerial fleet.. this is the Bronto 33m ALP turning out of Tottenham Fire Stn in the late 90’s.

A day in the smoke & wandered past this place.. however, growing up as a ‘Bermondsey Boy’ I remember the old place when it had a ERF PE & Pump plus the AEC Merryweather TL.. pity I didn’t have a camera back then..
