Abraham Lincoln paid 3x more in taxes in 1864 than Donald Trump in 2016. Not more as a share of his income. More in taxes. Lincoln paid $1981.67 in federal taxes on a salary of $25,000 in 1864-1865. Trump paid $750 in 2016, about one-third what Lincoln paid, but 151 years later.

That sad feeling of working for several years for more inclusive practices within my department seminars. Then, after handing over the reigns, the needle pops right back to where it was. Yes, I will talk with the leaders but also .. I'm tired.

I read an academic article today about how advisors play a really important role in their PhD students' career interests. I know this and it's worth emphasizing. If you have students, remember your words and deeds can well have an oversized impact on their entire future careers.

Provocative and timely op ed from @catsonatardis How can university demonstrate care for PhD students? She has concrete suggestions Grad schools should halt doctoral admissions in the humanities for two years (opinion)

Y'all, my mom just texted me about a tiny, floofy puppy who is in need of relocation/new home. Just a few pictures of the li'l fluffball make me squeeee to an astonishing level. Now I'm smitten & my wife thinks this is hilarious. So, I maybe have a new dog, in Jan?

Successfully defended my PhD dissertation today! In the spirit of acknowledging & normalizing failure in the process, I defended in a skirt made of rejection letters from the course of my PhD. #AcademicTwitter #AcademicChatter #PhDone THANK YOU to everyone involved in my journey

Integrate questions of career and skill development into the curriculum from the start. Glad that one more departs is getting the right idea. We career coaches are here to help!
In the past decade, the number of jobs in English advertised by the Modern Language Association has dropped by more than half. Of the jobs that are left, a shrinking percentage exist on the tenure-track.

This! We careercoaches working with PhDs and Postdocs say this all the time. Check out @Grad_Careers and @CarpeCareers
I am not really here to make grand suggestions about how someone can/should become me. But, I would love to see discussions which focus more on: transferrable skills; other people as a source of knowledge; research as a life skill; intellectual + joyful curiosity

If I could change ONE THING about the way academia conducts searches for new faculty: no more reference letters. Time consuming and biased. I couldn’t stop and proposed 5 fixes @chronicle @Golde_Stanford @StanfordBEAM

The way we hire tenure-track professors takes a toll on candidates and departments. Here’s how the system could be better.

Excellent @Grad_Careers advice on what matters for trans/non-binary people in a graduate job search. We need more articles and advice like this!

I often advise grad students to find a group of colleagues who are ambitious, yet kind and authentic, and commit to driving, encouraging, and championing each other. I didn't realize I also need this as a faculty member until I found it. Now I can't imagine my career without it.

I have seen so much change in very recent years, and actions taking place nationally (for example, @AAUniversities PhD Education Initiative) that will further accelerate change. I agree that 1 powerful action to take is reframing one's own mindset: being curious, open-minded.
Academics (faculty members) have a crucial role here, in changing this culture. They must educate themselves, be curious about and truly respect the work their own alumni are doing out in the world. Assume we're intellectually engaged at our jobs. Why assume we're not?
