My first dissertation chapter is out in mBio! We cultured a vertically transmitted endosymbiont, sequenced its genome, and showed that it is stably inherited across generation when injected into new hosts!

It turns out this symbiotic bacterium highly expresses a horizontally acquired NRPS operon, that results in production of a small molecule with antifungal properties. (3/3) (the whole story is a bit more complicated): https://t.co/JwdQB7zyQs

Fun collaboration with Diana Percy and Patrick Degnan showing rapid loss (<1M) of nutritional symbionts in Hawaiian psyllids is associated with galling behavior. All psyllids (free-living, open gall, closed gall) radiated on the same host plant species over ~5MY.

The galls are so nutritious that psyllids that transitioned to galling have lost their nutritional symbionts ! 🤯 https://t.co/7QPuPxPcVi

Axenic cultivation of vertically transmitted bacteria is pretty uncommon… These results have some fun implications for what experimental approaches can be applied that haven’t been possible in this system until now!
