I am launching a fundraiser to help with the legal bills associated with 3 lawsuits. Most of the funds will go to AB in the Steven Galloway lawsuit and C who is a student sued by a instructor. The funds will also help me retain an expert report.
#MeToo
I am really tired of people constructing the "court of public opinion" as one that is kind to the complainants. Just ask me,
@lucydecoutere
,
@ComingForwardca
or
#ubcaccountable
complainants how kind public opinion has been to us.
When things happen (like abusers being given a huge platform) it can sometimes make us feel threatened as a response to our own trauma. Take a step back and remind your body that this is not an emergency and you do not have to respond immediately or at all.
WOW mom told me she had very bad news.... I didn't know what to prepare for. She then announced it is snowing. We are now having a lecture on what is allowable following the announcement of "bad news".
Just submitted my dissertation to FGS! I’m done! I passed with no revisions and was nominated for a diss award (although my lawyer said that York will never give me any awards it feels good to be nominated nonetheless!). Onto better and bigger things.
Naming MC in
@nationalpost
sends a loud message to survivors - if you come forward about sexual violence, the accused just has to sue you (regardless of legal merit) and you will be named in a national publication, without any warning or notice. A tactic of the rich and powerful.
I never hear from survivors of gendered violence or frontline workers that they hope for MORE LAW. Instead I hear they need resources like access to safe housing, childcare, counselling, transportation. I don't see the criminalization of coercive control as a win.
Happy book release day to me! Now available. Keep sending me pics of you with my book. It's really exciting to see. Buy from UBC Press directly or your fav local bookstore.
@UBCPress
I've been researching men who sue (their victims, bystanders, etc...) after they are accused of sexual violence since 2016. What would you want to know as a service provider, lawyer, or someone who is worried about being sued? *I am going to create a FAQ style report for folks.
57 women have come added their names to a class action lawsuit against Nygard for sexual violence. His sons have also filed lawsuits for the same. Protest in

Came to teach. Got served by Steven Galloway. Asked one of my students to document the occasion. Just another day at this god awful institution called
#yorkuniversity
.
The stakes are very high with what’s happening this week and the future of reporting sexual assault on campus and I am saddened by the silence of my feminist colleagues
#ubcaccountable
you wanna talk about trial by social media!? I just found out I’m allegedly being sued in an article by
@blatchkiki
but haven’t been served any legal docs 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ due process tho.
just realized that five years ago today the seemingly never ending criminal trial I testified in started. still don't recommend reporting, still don't believe there have been enough material changes for "justice" to be achieved in the criminal legal system for sexual violence.
can't believe I am entering year 6 of the PhD. somehow during the duration of the PhD, i managed to survive a rape trial, a criminal appeal and getting sued and am still on track to finish on time. will need 10 years of rest to recuperate.
Well guess what? My life is fucking great now that this is done. I was awarded a SSHRC and am in year 4 of my PhD despite all this bullshit. It only gets better from here.
Also calling me a false accuser is defamatory. Dude signed a peace bond. I’m being falsely accused of making false accusations. Learn the law. Read a book and shut the fuck up.
The state of Victoria, Australia is making critical moves to make those who report gendered and sexual assault immune to defamation claims. Would like to see similar work here in Canada.
I have ethics approval to continue my research on lawsuits for sexual violence. In my new study I’m interested in talking to people who initiated legal action for sexual assault AND people who were sued for defamation.
Dear lawyers, stop telling us we can’t settle if we don’t take an NDA. I spoke to many women in my research who experienced serious mental health consequences because of the NDA, contemplated suicide because they were fearful of talking about what happened to them - to anyone.
My former lawyer gave me a bill for 500 k bc I refused to sign a NDA &resign from my career. Now the bastard is mad bc I’m on twitter talking about MY experiences of sexual assault/harassment and racism at TPS.He also silenced my 2 colleagues by being a bully POS. Fuck you H.
Also plz note not everyone is a survivor. Many don’t survive. Just take note of how many women have been murdered by their partners in ontario in the last couple weeks.
#MeToo
hi i just want to remind everyone that I am being sued for posting a photo of myself in an art gallery and somehow the free speech crew has done fuck all to amplify how these lawsuits will stifle expression in this country
Got the best Christmas present last week. My first box of copies of my forthcoming book

I would like to pass a motion to ban older white men who come to sit in the front row of my talks and interject with their opinions about my work without being prompted and take up way too much space.
I will be starting a fundraiser for a few women being sued for defamation tied to allegations of sexual violence. I know it’s a terrible time to ask for money but trust me it’s an even worst time to be sued by the man you report for sexual assault 🙃
I am more than a little annoyed by Galloway's
#silencebreaking
essay published in the
@nationalpost
. The NP has granted Galloway the power to once again recast the narrative by selectively publishing pieces of the Boyd Report and his own account of events.

“When you have powerful people working with subordinates, it’s almost always a bad idea to have sexuality acted on. People may be legally adults but their ability to freely say no can be constrained by the power dynamics.” - Jennifer Freyd

i am in court r now listening to a lawyer argue that we are not to believe someone who discloses sexual assault unless we also contact the alleged perpetrator to verify the allegations. lmao non-sensical
Excited to announce LISA - an initiative offering sexual assault legal information to
@WesternU
students! I’ve been helping develop this important initiative.

breached the terms of settlement at the human rights tribunal to offer external counselling services for sexual violence survivors on campus. This will have a significant impact on the most marginalized community members.

I keep having a recurring dream that I am about to finish my PhD and realize I didn't finish high school and have to go back to get some credits to graduate NIGHTMARE
Just received the response from York U on my breach of settlement application and I just want to say hi to all the folks on staff being paid to monitor my tweets 🙃🙃🙃
A lawyer friend said it best the other day when discussing why so many resort to online declarations of racism, sexism yet the courts still can’t seem to grasp why it’s so necessary - the courts (and others) seem to hate women who speak out online..
The SA survivors fund that
@cupe3903comms
has paid for a majority of my legal bills after I was sexually assaulted. This is why I am so passionate that this fund is available to our members.
I don’t really care about electoral politics at all. But I also like sex education and candidates who give time to issues of gendered violence. These are things I don’t have time to loose. So I will vote for that alone.
Nothing like getting to campus to find out from Christie Blatchford that Galloway is suing my friends and me. Lol. Talk about litigating through the media.
friendly reminder to people considering posting public allegations of sexual violence - do not do this with the expectation that you will be protected by anti-SLAPP. worried about how frequently I hear this from women. SLAPP motions are not cheap and not a guarantee win.
yes Weinstein is guilty and no, things are not better for survivors. to say otherwise is misleading and unfair to survivors who are still being labelled liars and being refused service because all of the funding for victims is being cut by our governments.
#MeToo
my research on men who sue after they are accused of sexual violence has revealed very very compelling data about campus sexual violence and just how fucked campus response to sexual assault is. Active bystanders are institutionally punished routinely.
Atwood’s contribution to
#aftermetoo
is on the backs of all the survivors at UBC who Atwood has publicly humiliated. Do not forget that. They will likely never see a dime of this money.
lol @ male lawyers asking me why events for my book aren’t set up as debates. If you wanna organize a debate - organize it, pay me and sign me up! If I wanted to celebrate my feminist book with a bunch of devils advocate lawyers - I could have but don’t want to.
I am so excited I was offered two classes for the upcoming school year that I am actually ecstatic to teach :) fall - victimology and winter - criminal law in Canada (for undergrads)
i am teaching an undergrad course in criminal law this semester and next time it should just be renamed murdering women and drunk driving: a case study in hegemonic masculinity
Genuine question: if Galloway is as innocent as he claims to be - why didn’t UBC give him his job back? And why was the $ he rewarded for breach of privacy and not wrongful dismissal? Actually curious about this.
Highlight of my night/week: a woman brought her mom to the screening last night because my relationship with my mom through the trial inspired her to share with her mom what she was going through. Love to all the parents and caregivers who support us 💕💕💕
#slutornut
Is anyone in
#cdnmedia
gonna do a follow up on this? Or does due process, censorship and free speech only matter when we call people out for sexual violence ??
My immediate reaction this morning was defensive, angry. Must respond immediately. But sometimes the cost of responding is too high. Sometimes just letting the news cycle run its course is survival.
I’ve been slowly filling my bookshelves with writers who have challenged
#ubcaccountable
- which is one way you can actually support the folks who have taken risks to speak out against sexual violence.
#canlit
If u ever think having a fun Twitter name is a good idea - just think about how it will sound in court to be constantly referred to as sassy pants. Trust me.
anyone else go through edits and wonder how certain sentences / ideas made their way into the draft you actually shared with people (lol).
#AcademicChatter
Apparently it’s acceptable for
@nationalpost
to publicly denounce a woman who reported sexual assault as a “false accuser” prior to that being established by a court in the name of due process? Nope. Sexist reporting.
Just submitted my syllabus for the Victimology course I’m teaching this fall at U of Winnipeg. The memoirs I selected for the students to review are:
@eternitymartis
,
@helen_knott
and
@JulieSLalonde
- Thx for all the suggestions team Twitter
I went to York to hand in my dissertation proposal. Funny, as soon as I got to campus I got a phone call that I was named in the national post as I was being sued as a result of my activism. Bitter sweet day for me.
#PhDLife
#AcademicFreedom
I reported sexual assault in 2015.. it took SO long to get in for therapy and the therapy provided didn't even get me to the criminal trial - let alone the appeal. How can we encourage people to report while simultaneously cutting supports to survive the process?
#ontpoli
men who are upset that people on twitter are mean to them for calling them out for sexual assault/harassment. YOU SHOULD TRY LIVING AS A WOMAN ON TWITTER WHO HAS REPORTED SEXUAL ASSAULT. If only I had the money to sue all of YOU.
Today I experienced shock, old trauma re-surfacing and sadness. But I go to bed feeling community love, support and kindness. Many of whom I have never had the pleasure of meeting IRL you deserve shout outs:
@AmandaLeduc
@a_h_reaume
@UBCGlynnis
@AGAWilmot
and many more.
Must I say it again? I never needed any man or judge to tell me I was raped. I reported for the sole purpose of returning to campus. THAT IS IT. That was my sole objective and it has been achieved.
@ethorkel
How come Atwood got to see the entire report (and comment on it publicly) yet the person who reported has been denied access to the report and has been sued therefor forced into complete silence. Ugh!!!
I know York U thinks eventually I will stop fighting them to make things better for folks who experience sexual assault on campus - and I eventually will. Just not yet.
Obligatory tweet reminding you to vote today as if you missed the thousands of others tweeting the same thing. If you care about any of these things: sex education, the number of women murdered in Ontario this year, post secondary education like I do - you will go 🗳 VOTE
