Finally starting the latest from my literacy oracles, @MJLiben and David Liben. For starters, let me 👏👏👏 the fact that the cover this important topic in 150 pages, with lots of “Tips for…” boxes?

Litmus test for school board candidates (and superintendents) what did you think of @ehanford “Sold a Story” and “Hard Words?” If they’ve never heard of it, it’s disqualifying.

To improve literacy, many schools expanded the time that kids spend in language arts classes by cutting down on content-rich learning in subjects like science and history. Read more about why this may harm student’s reading comprehension. https://t.co/D0z49M6flO

Strong readers are not born—they are built over time, and those efforts start in preschool. Proud to join @li14751 and @classroomwonder in updating the curriculum review tool to include early childhood!

Misconception #3: The “5 pillars” (PA, phonics, fluency, vocab & comp) = SoR. These ‘pillars’ were identified in the NRP report 23 years ago. Since then we know that oral lang and background knowledge play a HUGE role in reading proficiency. We should now call it the “Big 7.”

Facts. Doubt many of my kids will say we wrote objective summaries but instead will likely summarize the text we read but not the nuance of the skill. When we can combine skill AND content into knowledge building = winning IMO

What are there downstream effects? A knowledge based curriculum allows teachers to: ✅ Develop subject matter expertise ✅ Help struggling students ✅ Make connections with families rather than spending hours each week scouring the internet & creating lesson plans from scratch

If we are serious about improving schools, ⁦@rpondiscio⁩ reminds us it’s long past time to rethink curriculum: “A strong, knowledge-based curriculum not only leads to smarter teachers and students but also has beneficial downstream effects…” ⁦
