Excited to share LIQ HDR - a home cage capacitive lickometer system for rats - equipped with custom 3D prints to capture lick microstructure in two-bottle choice drinking experiments. Now available on bioRxiv as part of a home cage drinking methods paper. https://t.co/ah5gVa2ezV

This one was a LONG time coming having struggled thru #newPI chaos & #Covid_19. Very grateful to @PrzybyszPhD for getting it across the finish line. Big thanks to @mejoffe for the invitation to be a part of @NeuropharmJ special issue on PFC circuit fxn.

🎉Check out our newest work in @NeuropharmJ showing that IL mPFC neurons are particularly susceptible to lasting effects of chronic ethanol. Plus the first ever data examining the neurophysiology of RMTg-projecting mPFC neurons (with & without EtOH).

SO excited to share the latest work from the @glover_lab looking at physiological adaptations in mPFC projections to the RMTg after chronic ethanol exposure! Here's the link to the paper, and a not-so-short thread on what we found! 🧵1/15 https://t.co/9QZIAqC4pA

In combination with the original LIQ HD Arduino interface, this system allows for continuous capture of drinking microstructure in the home cage setting at high (1-min) resolution.

Shikun also added sipper blockers to his design. This went a long way to preventing data loss that can result from drinking occurring prior to initiating data capture or erroneous lick measures that occur when rats interact with the sippers during daily calibration.

Our 3D printed bottle holder is compatible with commercial off-the-shelf bottles instead of the custom ones required for the mouse version. Bottles are installed on the cage top & accessible to rats in much of the same way as drinking bottles used for standard care & husbandry.

We secured the bottle holder to the cage top with a laser-cut acrylic panel further limiting potential for destruction & need for regular replacement of parts. This turned out to be incredibly simple & affordable through our @UICEngineering MakerSpace (~$6/sq ft).

In our early versions rats were demolishing our designs and we replaced 3D printed in-cage components almost daily. To avoid this Shikun re-designed the bottle holder & electronic housing relocating everything to the cage top out of reach of even the most motivated chewers!

Larger cages meant scaling up Nick & Marie’s original hardware design, but this risked compromising capacitive sensing and comms btwn sensor boards. Shikun mitigated this by using the QwiicBus comm system to achieve long-range, near lossless transmission via Ethernet cables.

We initially thought adapting LIQ HD to rats would be fairly straight forward. This is an area where I am unable to learn from previous experience ….. We were very wrong! It took us a year during which Shikun went through SO MANY iterations! But the end result is pretty amazing!

LIQ HDR development was led by uber talented Glover lab member, Shikun Hou. Those of you who are familiar with his previous work developing Pi USB Cam know this has to be a beautiful product.

This is adapted from LIQ HD for mice, which was developed by Marie Doyle & Nick Petersen at Vanderbilt/UMass Chan. Many thanks to both for sharing their designs & for many, many helpful conversations along the way. Link to LIQ HD original flavor below. https://t.co/V75SV6SN5d

🎉 New work from @glover_lab in @PsychopharmEBPS led by @Dr_Ramirez_ describing loss of CTA incubation following chronic EtOH exposure. Stay tuned to see what neurobiological mechanisms drive this maladaptive behavior!

🎉 New work from @glover_lab in @ACERjournal led by @Przy_PhD describing important individual differences in response to EtOH. Katie will be using some very cool approaches to explore the neurobiological basis for these differences with the support of an F32 NRSA from @NIAAAnews

My first postdoc paper from @glover_lab is out today! This is a simple but important (imo) behavioral study showing that we can model innate differences in sensitivity to the aversive properties of ethanol in outbred rats. Why is this important? 🧵1/ https://t.co/AtUkUtg8Lf
