During this weekend in the 'V Annual Symposiu of Spanish Botany" in Granada, we are presenting our preliminary results about the Orchidaceae diversity in the Principlaity of Asturias (NW Spain). Come and take a closer look! Also available at: https://t.co/cuovcy30gN

This research represents the most profound study of the family Orchidaceae in Asturias, which can be qualified as an European hotspot for orchids.

As expected, most Asturian orchids were found to prefer open and sunny spaces, (i.e., grasslands), with only a few growing on forests. Yet, soil pH was found as one of the main drivers in their distribution, as their diversity decreases eastwards, where acid soils are dominant.

Thus, we have determined that in Asturias we can find, at least, 52 confirmed species, more than all of Portugal, and 13 hybrids. Some of these taxa were recorded for the first time for the region, such as Ochis spitzelii, Ophrys lutea, O. speculum or Gymnadenia conopsea.

In addition to our own fieldwork, we have collected many records from other sources, such as different herbaria, scientific literature, social media, and of course, citizen science platforms such as @inaturalist where we have created our own project: https://t.co/SMdxQDRdgO

EVA-MAP: https://t.co/aLGGRAddMf We have launched a new online map of vegetation plots available in the European Vegetation Archive (EVA) and the ReSurveyEurope database. You can select plots using a filtering form or drawing an area in the map, explore plot metadata and export

Yet, we remain optimistic as our models predict several suitable sites for this species in our region, still undersampled.

We found its populations in hay meadows close to water streams. However, their closeness to urban areas causes an excessive mowning of the vegetation. This affects negatively their fitness, losing the perching sites where males exhibit themselves to find mates.

Do you know the blue beetle Hoplia coerulea? In our latest research we studied its westernmost populations, located in Asturias (NW Spain), trying to understand its distribution and potential threats. https://t.co/aVKMTVvBb1

New study out! Tracing the biogeographic history of the world's most isolated insular floras 🌿🌍 Plant colonization in the sub-Antarctic was driven by long-distance dispersal—wind, birds, and ocean currents—rather than by ancient continental drift. 🔗 https://t.co/2kW9p0I1Wy
