Needs an intervention, and fast. @ComplexDublin has been used by all types of orgs - from DCC to political parties to theatre producers, club promoters + much more, as well as countless artists. Is key cultural infrastructure. For now please sign petition: https://t.co/IiIi7MaPVV

“I’m in NCAD and they do really good balls and events. But from an outsider perspective, if you were a tourist coming to Dublin going to a club, I don’t think there are that many options. They just close so early.” - very true and sadly could've been said anytime in last 20+ yrs.

"Tired people don’t cause fights. It’s always the people you’re kicking out that don’t want to go that could cause problems.” - a lot of truth in this: a tired, satisfied customer, is much easier to deal with than someone whose night has been cut short (every weekend in Ireland).

🎯 “People drink slower when you don’t put them on the clock. And also you’d have staggered closing times instead of everyone on the street at three o’clock. That’s where you get the problems,” Grier said.

Ireland's NTE "experiment" is a charade without licensing reform. Good to read insights from those in-the-game and who socialise here. And Govt parties wonder how to connect with young people? Easy: don't renege on promises and at least plan for them @FineGael @fiannafailparty

Reads well but what would it mean in practice? What cultural amenities and social options will these areas have, beyond maybe libraries and coffee shops? Don't forget, Govt has recently intervened to remove the 5% cultural + community space requirement for developments like this.
Dublin City Council has agreed plans to rezone land for up to 25,000 new housing units in the capital.

Hmm I remember when the Irish government supposedly cared enough to commit to a similar change 👀 @GiveUsTheNight
The UK government is launching a fast-track review to scrap “outdated” rules for pubs, bars, and live music venues through a new initiative, Cheers to Change https://t.co/f5loSfds0V

It's always useful to see new articles on this emerge, but sadly few media outlets or writers who cover it, deal with the long-term impact of the act, nor acknowledge that it's still on the statute books! That still directly affects us all.

Somehow this 1935 @fiannafailparty act is still in place, that nightclubs still operate under. While the Catholic Church was no doubt the primary influence on the legislation, the main prolonged campaign against the dance hall (now clubs) has been the Govt's. FF + @FineGael
Most read on #RTEBrainstorm: how the Catholic Church's prolonged campign against the 'evil' of the Irish dance hall led to the 1935 Public Dance Halls Act and a licensing system for dancing. Analysis by @danielmcarey @DCU_SoC @DCU @Researchirel

In the coming days, the Communities Minister @gordonlyons1 is due to respond to the Licensing Review report, which was published in February, making decisions which will have a profound impact on the future of nightlife and culture in Northern Ireland.

A standout point made by Gardaí in the Irish Times' “One Night in Dublin” series. If venues are well-run, an area can self-police itself. That the Guards here are talking about Dublin’s often busiest nightlife strip, is telling. @MichealMartinTD @SimonHarrisTD @OCallaghanJim

A related point also re: sustainability of culture and social activity, is the use of vacant and derelict buildings. Fast-tracked meanwhile use and long-term use of these buildings for *exciting* cultural use is key to bringing back vibrancy to cities and towns. @anoisagency

Waste collection here is deeply flawed. While the work of street cleaners is invaluable, the privatisation of collection services + shortage of public bins makes job harder. Littering is a problem. Many venues help though by continually clearing litter not from their premises.

With respect to this DCC employee - who also supports the killing of gulls it seems - the sustainability of social activity + cultural events are better managed in city centres than, say, a large festival site. A shift towards more (and later) weekly activity is only a good thing
“The worst thing that could happen would be if they extended the licensing hours. We’d never get in to clean up after them.” Interesting comment from those at the coal face. Similar views from emergency services. @OCallaghanJim

Kerry is amongst the strictest counties in Ireland. 2am is the regular closing time, for nightclubs too. And we wonder why nightlife is dying, and why Tralee hasn't had a club in years. Is not just trends or cost-of-living. Govt's licensing system and nightlife setup is banjaxed.

"State solicitor Diane Reidy said the issue was one of resources, not public order and the Puck Fair was the only festival in Kerry seeking to open to 3am." A measurement of the strain on resources, of going to 3am, should be made this year, so everyone is clearer going forward.

The fact that a State solicitor had to be onhand for this hearing, makes it all the more idiotic. How much longer can Ireland’s completely inflexible, mean-spirited management of the night-time economy continue? Anyway, well done to all involved.
Publicans in Killorglin, Co Kerry, have been granted permission to serve alcohol until 3am during the Puck Fair festival following an appeal
