After a year in too much of a cave, I'm re-emerging with a new class, a podcast on product leadership, and even - god forbid - new blog posts, such as this: The Missing Step Every PM Should Do When Starting a New Job

a moment of gratitude for @lissijean for bringing together such a well-rounded set of guests week after week that we all get to learn from. @giffco interview is excellent and focuses on such an important area in product leadership and an area I continue to try and improve myself.
Have you listened to @giffco's episode yet? He tells us why staying focused on communicating business outcomes vs getting in the weeds of how you got there is always a good rule of thumb, particularly when it comes to financial modeling. https://t.co/OJXSZuwfB9

glad you found it helpful!
Just finished listening to one of the greatest episodes of Product Thinking Podcast by @lissijean ft @giffco. They talked about translating product to the exec layer and finished with understanding company valuations (top vs bottom lines). So helpful!! https://t.co/gPYfC3Ymyr

@Giffco explains why product execs who are able to see C-level decisions through the lens of growth and valuation have a superpower. https://t.co/OJXSZueEJB

I'm not seeing a form factor that makes today's VR sig better than second life era. Oculus is fun but ain't it.

that ends my cranky-old-man thread and I might get flamed :) but students thinking this way really do themselves a disservice /4

I chalked up the attitude as specific to biz school, where ppl often go to network more than study, but I guess it’s more widespread and I’m not an NYU-spec thing. It def contributed to my not wanting to teach there anymore. /3

When I pushed my students in one class to step up, they really didn’t like it and it showed in harsh reviews. When I was young I always liked my toughest teachers the most cause they cared and I grew. /2

interesting to read about firing of org chemisty prof at NYU. I faced same thing teaching product mgt at Stern. Had some great students, but a lot of ppl who felt like classes shouldn’t be hard / get an A for phoning it in. /1

thoughtful thread. Had a CEO once who said “managers over-index on the under-performers when they should focus more on the performers”, which I get, but it’s so critical to lean into the WHY as @mekkaokereke highlights here. Almost 100% of time it’s about fit.

Weekend reading: a short essay I wrote a year ago illustrating the concept of “highly aligned and loosely coupled” or how to encourage teams to take on their positions and not play “bunchball.”

I mean it's great to have frameworks in one's toolbox. Just use them to inspire while cutting through to the simplest essence of what needs to be done.

A couple times in my recent prod leadership class PMs believed that applying a framework was solution to relationship problems. Don't overcomplicate. Keep it simple and focus on the human elements.

been thinking about this since @shreyas post. I still stand by the skills matrix as an essential tool for transparency, equity, and employee growth. The fact that ppl misapply or abuse it, as ppl do to a remarkable degree with *all* useful frameworks, doesn’t change my view.
The apparent JTBD of most career ladders (you know, that huge spreadsheet/table with a plethora of skills & behaviors for each level? yes, that thing) is to help you grow. The real JTBD is to justify the company’s promote/no-promote decisions by making them seem fully objective.
