A much-needed dialogue has started on how to address diverging estimates of man-made land use emissions. Two recent analyses offer complementary views: - IPCC Expert Meeting    https://t.co/J4ndqULwqV - Allen et al. 2024

Incredible stat: A single container ship of solar panels can provide as much electricity as more than 50 large LNG tankers of gas – or 100 large coal ships There's many more insights in IEA Energy Technology Perspectives 2024 – here's a selection 🧵 1/7

Another year, another climate gap. 🌍🔥🌡️ It's the 15th time I joined the lead author team of the @UNEP #Emissionsgap report. How high are global emissions? What have countries pledged? And is this all aligned with the Paris Agreement? Let’s dig in with a 🧵/1

New UNEP emissions gap report highlights a "massive gap between rhetoric and reality" and calls for a "quantum leap" in ambition to deliver Paris goals, as the world is way off-track today. I cover the details over at @CarbonBrief: https://t.co/PKae14c066

🚨 Collapse of the land carbon sink in 2023 🚨 As the CO2 growth rate reached a record high at Mauna Loa, we set up a low-latency analysis of the carbon budget and found that plants and soils absorbed almost no CO2 last year @gcarbonproject @gpbalsamo https://t.co/M7zJrkkf3k

The challenge is to achieve more credible and comparable land use emission estimates across communities, allowing the next @IPCC_CH Assessment Report and the next #ParisAgreement's #GlobalStocktake to assess the role of land use with more confidence and consistency. 7/7

The results will be documented in an Expert Meeting Report, which will inform the work of the 7th IPCC Assessment Report and provide relevant background information to the Parties of the ParisAgreement. For the coming years, there is a clear appetite to continue the dialogue. 6/7

Has the IPCC meeting solved the issue? Not yet, but its relevance and the need to 'translate' the two languages are well acknowledged. A much-needed dialogue has started and this is, by itself, a historic achievement. "It was an eye-opening event", said some experts. 5/7

The different languages make the dialogue difficult between the two key communities: the global carbon models supporting by the IPCC Assessment Reports and the national greenhouse gas inventories used to assess countries' compliance with climate targets. 4/7

This difference generates confusion, like for car driver having the dashboard in Km and the navigation system in Miles. It also has relevant implications, e.g. for assessing collective climate progress and for the remaining carbon budget/net zero goals. 3/7

Land-based mitigation is a key element to reach Paris Agreement’s goals. However, different communities developed different and incompatible approaches to estimate anthropogenic land use CO2 emissions estimates. 2/7

On 9-11 July, the IPCC held a Meeting on 'Reconciling Land Use Emissions' at #JRC, with >100 participants from 48 countries, including many world's leading experts in carbon modelling, Earth Observation, and national inventories. Why land use emissions need to be reconciled? 1/7

4. Warming tends to reduce these sinks: this explains why, on interannual time scales, variations in the atmospheric CO2 growth rate are driven by the climate variability.
