In Conclusion. Ethereum has prioritized decentralization and security from day one, and rightfully so as they are essential to core blockchain values. Now with RLNC, Ethereum doesn't have to choose between decentralization or scale, instead it can decentralize to scale.

Since RLNC propagation is so bandwidth efficient, any Ethereum node can run OptimumP2P (no rise in hardware requirements that would exclude lower spec nodes & hurt decentralization).

What this means for Ethereum. RLNC propagation scales extremely well, maintaining high performance over large networks and large message sizes,. This makes it possible to reduce Ethereum block times while increasing the gas limit (more transactions per block)!.

RLNC reduces the amount of redundant data being sent and the time it takes for a message to reach the entire network. Early testing has demonstrated significant improvements over Gossipsub (currently used in Ethereum consensus) in both average latency and variability.

This method of sharding & encoding messages grants 3 properties that are key for high performance:. 1. A node only needs to receive a subset of shards to reconstruct the original message. 2. A node can begin forwarding shards to the next peer before receiving the full message. 3.

How RLNC guarantees performance at scale. Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC) makes transmitting messages across a network faster and more efficient. It does so by breaking data down into small shards and encoding the shards using algebraic equations.

We see that the heart of the problem lies in communication between nodes. If we can guarantee fast communication between nodes and maintain that speed as the network expands, then scalability becomes decoupled from decentralization and security. This is EXACTLY what RLNC does.

Defining the Trilemma. Higher decentralization enhances network security, but coordinating across a large network makes scalability harder to achieve. Achieving scalability would come at the cost of downsizing the network or bounding communication.

In 2017 @VitalikButerin put forth the blockchain trilemma, an illustration of the tradeoffs between decentralization, security, and scalability when it comes to chain architecture. In 2025 we have the tech to bypass these tradeoffs, a way to scale without compromising elsewhere.
