Thank you all for your love. It means a lot! Doing this work was really hard as I had to provide childcare and school support for my kiddos during this time but it was doing this research that kept me sane and going. Here links to the work that came out of this endeavor so far...
Honored to have received the 2021
@uacoehp
Significant Research Award for my work on the unequal effects of the Covid pandemic on mothers, racial minoritized students and teachers. Glad I run after receiving the award to catch the end of my kid’s school musical and art exhibition
“We are pleased to inform you that your manuscript, "Gender Differences in Couples’ Division of Childcare, Work and Mental Health During COVID-19", has been accepted for publication in Review of Economics of the Household.” Best words for a Saturday morning email. I did it!
I did it! Against all odds. I partnered with Maria Prados
@CESRUSC
and we wrote a Paper on the Gender effects of COVID and just submitted it to a journal! Working paper coming out sometime next week. Whatever happens with it, today I celebrate! 🎉🎊🍾
I am happy to report I just got the email! This paper is now ACCEPTED in a journal! Only took me 8 years since the working paper version. Never give up!

I confess I am currently working on an R&R of a paper I wrote 8 years ago! I changed jobs, life happened, and somehow this paper got abandoned. Things I learned so far:

They still have to figure out my two surnames situation but this is now getting real. You can start calling me Full Professor Zamarro! Thank you all who have supported me with letters of recommendation, mentoring and advice during all this journey. It does take a village.
I was traveling giving a seminar when I realized something was wrong with my first pregnancy. I had to run to the ER where I was treated for an 8- week miscarriage. As in this post the fetus had stopped developing but I was not fully misscarrying on my own. This does happen! 👇
A very brave economist friend just shared this story, which she will also send to the AEA executive committee. Please sign our letter below to move the AEAs. The key is to communicate that we have critical mass such that losing our registration fees is worse than relocating.
After 2 weeks in the hospital fighting COVID19, my mom is back home! I am so grateful for all the doctors and nurses who have been taking care of her. ❤️❤️❤️
#stayhome
this virus is no joke.
I am so thankful for the nurse who left this message today for my mom who is in the hospital with COVID19. She needed this message today. We all needed this message ❤️❤️❤️
Soul crashing reviewer comment “there are grammatical errors suggesting a lack of care” If there are some remaining grammatical errors is not because I don’t care but because English is my second language! So frustrating. Just indicate the errors and I will happily revise them..
I cooked a paella to celebrate the good news 🥘 about my mom leaving the hospital and we are having croquetas for dinner. It can’t get more Spanish than that. I miss Spain so much these days. The weight of being far away has been so heavy...
A teacher told my parents I would never be anything in life because I talked too much with other kids in class. I was in second grade. I graduated in Economics top of my class. I got my Econ PhD cum laude. I am a full Professor and hold an Endowed Chair.
🚨New Publication🚨 I am excited to share the news that my paper with Maria J. Prados "Gender Differences in Couple's Division of Childcare, Work, and Mental Health During COVID-19" is now published at REHO and available here:

“Interestingly, increasing husband’s flexibility has a greater impact on the wife’s labor adjustment than her own flexibility, augmenting her participation rate and working hours by 10 and 7 percentage points”
To all the Wonder Women out there trying to survive doing work while taking care of their kids. I see you. I feel you. Happy Halloween!

It’s official now. As of last Friday I am interim Vice-Head of
@ua_edreform
. Feeling grateful to be serving alongside my great colleague
@P_Diddy_Wolf
. This is bittersweet as we follow the footsteps of
@jaypgreene
a great Department head. Wish us luck in this new role!
Because I got my kids vaccinated, submitted a paper to a journal, helped my students with
@aefpweb
proposals, organized a virtual town hall for our
@ua_edreform
PhD program, gave a talk on my new gender and Covid work and was interviewed for a podcast this week!
After two desk rejects and a revise and resubmit here it is my article with
@collinhitt
and
@ilde76
"When Students Don't Care: Reexamining International Differences in Achievement and Student Effort" just accepted at the Journal of Human Capital:
I have now 4 papers with revise and resubmit requests. I should be all excited but I just feel like this. How am I supposed to do this with my kids schooling and everything going on?! I feel I just can’t keep up 😔
“Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb…
Keep on moving, keep climbing…
It's all about, it's all about the climb”
I am so thankful for the nurse who left this message today for my mom who is in the hospital with COVID19. She needed this message today. We all needed this message ❤️❤️❤️
Yesterday at a conference an academic asked me in shock how come I decided to move from Los Angeles, CA to Fayetteville, AR. This is not the first time and is a question that bothers me. I love and miss LA and CA in general but there is much to love about Fayetteville, AR 🧵
So proud and happy to announce that there is a new Dr. Zamarro in the world! 🎉 This one is Dr. Belén Zamarro Rodriguez, PhD in Occupational therapy. Proud sister here 🥳😊
Paper resubmitted!! Only 2 months delayed. I am not sure my revision would be enough to get it accepted but it was the best I could do given everything going on. Fingers crossed 🤞
Honored to have received the 2021
@uacoehp
Significant Research Award for my work on the unequal effects of the Covid pandemic on mothers, racial minoritized students and teachers. Glad I run after receiving the award to catch the end of my kid’s school musical and art exhibition
Current mood: Trying to change everywhere where it says I am Associate Professor to Full Professor. Getting ready for my first academic year as Full Professor :)
Another day another paper rejected. This one hurt because the paper was under review for over 7 months! Why can’t paper rejections at least be fast?! They would hurt less... But it happens to all of us...Just keep swimming, keep swimming...
One last celebration for my promotion to Full Professor. It really takes a village. I am thankful to
@jaypgreene
and
@ua_edreform
for all the mentoring and support!
This is it! The paper you have been waiting for 8 years!😉"Family Labor Participation and Child Care Decisions: The Role of Grannies" now published here:

One moment you are attending an academic conference, the next moment you are celebrating your kid turning 8! Perks of virtual conferences I guess.

Thanks for the beautiful creation

We just canceled our trip to Europe to visit our family this summer. It had to be done but it hurts not to know when I would be able to see them again 😔
Talking about research that makes an impact, I just found out that my research with Maria Prados on the gender effects of COVID

Aaaah! It is journal submissions decision day! I already received three submission decisions this morning! So far, I got an article accepted after a first revision 🎉, a second revise and resubmit opportunity in another, and first revise and resubmit opportunity in another one 🤞
This is 45 and my celebratory paella! 🥘🥳I spent my birthday week disconnecting, jumping waves with my family, enjoying an awesome summer read and amazing food. Hoping for many more years jumping waves together!
Had a health scare last week but today, fortunately, after some more tests it was concluded it was a false alarm and everything is going to be ok. This is your regular reminder to take care of yourself and find time for all those annual checkups.
We just heard back from a paper we resubmitted in MARCH 2020! After 1 year and 3 months in second review it is CONDITIONALLY ACCEPTED🥂 At least it is good news after all 😬
My 2nd grade teacher told me I would never be anything in life because I talked too much in class and so now I am a Professor and I can talk about research all day.
I got sent to the principal's office for correcting a substitute math teacher's algebra. So now I have a job where I grade students math until late at night and on weekends.
A sincere thank you to all candidates in our election for the AEFP board of directors. We appreciate your commitment to AEFP. Welcome and congratulations to our newly elected board members!
My kids went back to school today for their face to face school day. For the first time in 5 months they are not with me and for the first time in 5 months I can work uninterrupted in my home office. It’s such a weird feeling. I hope this lasts... 🙏🙏🙏🤞🤞🤞

Grappling with the fact that we lost a real gem in our field of Education research this week, a great researcher but also an amazing person and friend. My heart goes out to all who had the luck of having Tatiana in their lives one way or another 💔
Not surprise here. I am so excited to announce that we have a new Doctor in Education Policy
@ua_edreform
in the world. Congratulations Dr. Camp! 🎉 I hope you learned from me as much as I learned from you this past 4 years. You rock
@andrewcamp_
!
A year ago my mom was hospitalized with Covid. She ended up with double pneumonia and spending two weeks in the hospital. Today she got her first Covid vaccine!! 💉💉💉💃💃💃 Thankful for all the doctors, nurses and scientists who helped us be here today. Un día + es un día -
I am planning to discuss about how to come up with research ideas with students tomorrow. How do you come up with research ideas? Any thoughts on things to add

Same experiences here. I once was told my husband and I were not technically a family because I have a different last name... Women in Spain don’t change last names and kids get two surnames one from dad and one from mom...

weekend we’d like to acknowledge & thank our newly appointed EEPA Associate Editors
@gema_zamarro
@AcmAtteberry
@jjellisonholme
& Brent Evans. This December announcement deserved more fanfare! Gratitude to this dream team for their service!
It’s conference/seminar season and when I travel it’s always hard on the kids. I bought a map so I can show them where I go. I hope this helps a bit. I am excited to give a seminar at Vanderbilt University next week. My kids not so much...

My 6 years old boy this morning: “When I grow up I want to be a daddy and maybe a teacher. Boys can be teachers right? I think they can... Like my music teacher. He is a boy!” Role models matter to break stereotypes!
With Covid cases raising quickly here and the lack of mask usage, we decided no to send the kids to the summer camp we had planned for next week. What was going to be a week of work at the office will be now another week of trying to combine work with childcare. I am so tired 😔
